HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac men's soccer earned its largest win margin of the season on Wednesday afternoon at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden, topping Manhattan, 4-0, to earn its second MAAC win of the season.
Freshman Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Connecticut) scored twice in the win, giving him a team-high seven goals on the year. Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey) and William Pustari (North Haven, Connecticut) each chipped in with a goal of their own, helping the Bobcats improve to 6-5-0 (2-1-0 MAAC).
The last time the Bobcats scored four goals in a game was on Sept. 14, 2011 in a victory over Hartford.
Scheiderman got things started for the Bobcats, scoring on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute to make it 1-0. He got fouled just inside the near side of the box by a Manhattan defender, then proceeded to blast the PK past the left side of Manhattan goalkeeper Connor Hayes to break the tie.
It took Quinnipiac more than 50 minutes to score again, but Whelan struck for two goals within five minutes of each other to break the game open and make it 3-0. Whelan's first goal came at 75:40, when he headed in a Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) pass from the near side to make it 2-0. Colton Grob (Suffield, Conecticut) then set Whelan up in front of the net again, lobbing a pass in from the center of the field – and Whelan headed it in once again for his seventh goal of the year.
Dally now has three assists in the 2016 season, while Grob's helper was the first of his season.
Pustari scored for the second time in three in the 87th minute, giving the Bobcats a four-goal advantage. Liam O'Sullivan (Trumball, Connecticut) was credited with the assist, his first of the season.
Quinnipiac freshman goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made three saves in net, earning his fourth shutout of the season. He now has a 0.79 goals-against average for the year, making 36 saves in total.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8. The Bobcats travel to Buffalo, NY to square off with Canisius in another MAAC contest at 7 p.m. – then head to New Rochelle, New York to face Iona on Oct. 12.
