JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) scored in overtime to propel Quinnipiac men's soccer past Saint Peter's, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Bobcats clinch a spot in the MAAC Tournament.
Quinnipiac improves to 11-5-0 (7-1-0 MAAC) on the season, while Saint Peter's falls to 3-12-2 (2-7-0 MAAC). The Bobcats have now won seven straight conference games for the first time in program history.
Taylor's golden goal was his third score of the season, and second in the past two games. He also scored against Monmouth in Quinnipiac's latest home win just a week ago. Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) was credited with an assist, his fourth of 2016.
Saint Peter's recorded the only shot on goal in the first half at 32:36. Luke Fairlamb ripped one toward net, but Quinnipiac goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) was quick off his line to make the stop. Iakovidis made two saves in the contest, earning his sixth shutout of the season. He entered Wednesday's game ranked No. 11 nationally in save percentage (.838).
Quinnipiac then had a chance to break the tie just moments into the second half. Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey) blasted a shot toward net in the 51st minute, which hit directly off the cross bar and out of the goal to keep the game scoreless.
Dally had a series of good chances around the 60-minute mark. He first had a shot saved by Saint Peter's goalie Jaime Cleland, then blasted one wide-right of the net and it remained 0-0.
Taylor then got a shot off on net in the 75th minute, but Cleland was again there to make the stop and keep things scoreless. He netted the game-winner less than four minutes into the extra frame.
The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m., hosting Rider at the QU Soccer Field for senior day.
