HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked No. 6/7 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey defeated University of Massachusetts, 3-2, in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 4-2-1 while UMass drops to 2-2-0 on the season.
Quinnipiac junior Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) had a goal and an assist in the Bobcats' win while Tommy Schutt (Chanhassan, Minnesota) and Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) also scoring. Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) picked up his first career point on an assist on Schutt's goal, while Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois) picked up his team-leading fifth assist of the season. Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) picked up his fourth assist in his last four games and Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) picked up his first point, on an assist on MacMaster's goal, since the Bobcats' second game of the year.
In goal, first-year Bobcat Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) improved to 3-1-1 on the season after stopping 17 of UMass' 19 shots-on-goal. Truehl was on the wrong end of a loose puck in a scrum in front of him as well as a power play goal in the second period. The Bobcats out-shot UMass, 46-19, including a 20-9 ledger in the first frame.
Schutt's goal came on an incredible second effort after Pieper fired a puck on goal from the point. The carom off of UMass goalie Nic Renyard's leg found Whelan stick before it ended up in front of Schutt who had powered his way to goal. The Bobcats' assistant captain punched it past Renyard to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later, McKernan won a battle in the corner to Renyard's right and fed Rafferty up the boards. Rafferty centered a pass to Pieper above the face-off circle before Peiper found a lane, walked between the dots and sniped a shot off the crossbar and in to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
UMass fought back to tie the game when Ryan Badger took a feed from Riley McDougall behind the Bobcats and finished on a wrap-around after sneaking the puck past Truehl to put UMass on the board. Coming out of the break, UMass tied the game on a goal that required a review when Jonny Lazarus fired a shot off of Truehl's pads before getting tied up just above the crease. Jack Suter then swiped at the loose puck and poked it through the pile past the screened Bobcats' goalie to knot the game at 2-2.
A little more than seven minutes into the third period, Cukste intercepted an attempted clear by UMass in front of the Minutemen's bench and fed MacMaster who was streaking through the neutral zone. MacMaster skated wide to the left of Renyard before blasting a shot to the opposite post to give Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead.
The Bobcats sit idle this weekend but return to action on Nov. 4-5 with a trip to the North Country to take on Clarkson and St. Lawrence in Quinnipiac's first ECAC Hockey weekend of the season.
