Game Notes
Quinnipiac | Rider
HAMDEN. Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will look to get back on track when it hosts Rider on Monday night at 7 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center in an important MAAC contest.
The Bobcats come into the game at 1-2 in league play after suffering a home loss to preseason favorite Iona on Saturday, and can back to an even .500 by defending its home court against Rider (4-9, 0-2 MAAC). The Broncs swept both games a year ago, including a narrow 58-55 win at the TD Bank Sports Center, and a high-scoring rematch at Rider (94-83).
Quinnipiac is led in scoring by senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y. - pictured), who was held to seven points by the Gaels. Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) was the only Bobcat in double figures with 15 points, to go along with nine rebounds, giving him a combined 38 points and 24 rebounds in two games last week, including his 23 and 15 against Maine on Tuesday. Bundu had 38 points in his first 10 games combined, but matched that total in just two last week, while also grabbing a remarkable 17 of his 24 rebounds at the offensive end.
Rebounding was a key storyline against Iona, but not in the way that the Bobcats have become accustomed. Iona held a 57-42 edge on the boards, which was only the second time in Head Coach Tom Moore's nine seasons that Quinnipiac has been outrebounded by double figures. By comparison, Quinnipiac has held a +10 or better rebounding margin 104 times in that span (263 games), on its way to leading the nation in at least one rebounding category in each of the last five years.
Quinnipiac and Rider will feature some opponents familiar with each other as five players on the two teams played prep school basketball at Putnam Science in the last two years, including sophomore Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) and freshmen twins Andrew Robinson (Takoma Park, Md.) and Aaron Robinson (Takoma, Park, Md.) of Quinnipiac, and freshman Kealan Ives and sophomore Anthony Durham of Rider. In addition, fifth-year senior Will Simonton (QU) and senior Khalil Alford (Rider) both attended Fishburne Military Academy in Virginia.
