Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - Less than 48 hours after a tough home battle with MAAC-leading Monmouth, the Quinnipiac men's basketball team will be back in action at the TD Bank Sports Center when it takes on Niagara on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
The Bobcats kept battling back in its game against Monmouth on Thursday night, overcoming an early 10-point deficit and then closing a 14-point deficit down to five in the final four minutes. However, the Hawks were able to come up with a couple of key stops at the end and hit their foul shots to eventually win 66-51.
Quinnipiac hung in with an impressive effort on the glass, outrebounding Monmouth 57-43, with 27 of its rebounds coming on the offensive end. The 27 offensive boards were a season high for the Bobcats, who now lead the nation in that category at 18.1 per game, almost a rebound and a half more than West Virginia in second place at 16.7. Quinnipiac led the nation in offensive rebounds for four years in a row before West Virginia snapped the streak last year, although the Bobcats still led the country last year in total rebounds and rebounding margin.
Points were hard to come by, though as junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla. - pictured) and sophomore guard Ayron Hutton (Virginia Beach, Va.) tied for team high honors with 11 apiece. Harris knocked down two three-pointers, giving him two or more threes in seven of his last eight games. Harris also had 17 points in the first meeting with Niagara back on Dec. 4, which the Purple Eagles won 76-72.
In that first meeting at Niagara, senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill.) had 21 points and 18 points, respectively, which set personal highs at the time (McLean has since exceeded that with 24 against Boston University). Smith came up big in that contest after sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) went down with a knee injury five minutes into the game, which kept him out of action for five weeks. However, Niagara's Justin Satchell hit a big fadeaway as the shot clock expired with 25 seconds left in the game to push the lead to five points after Harris had hit a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game.
