Quinnipiac | Monmouth
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will host its first home game since the start of the spring semester when it entertains MAAC-leading Monmouth on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the second half of a TD Bank Sports Center doubleheader with the Quinnipiac women's basketball team, which also hosts Monmouth at 5 p.m.
Monmouth comes into the week with a 15-5 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the MAAC, which puts them alone in first place (although tied in the loss column with 6-2 Saint Peter's). The Hawks were the story of the MAAC during non-conference play, picking up wins over UCLA, Notre Dame, USC, Georgetown and Rutgers, ane earning national media attention for both their success and their bench celebrations.
The two teams met earlier this season at Monmouth in a game that was closely-contested most of the way before the Hawks pulled away at the end for an 88-74 win back on Jan. 9. That game snapped a 10-game winning streak for Quinnipiac in the series with Monmouth, dating back to January of 2010 when the two teams were members of the Northeast Conference. Junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) matched his career high with 19 points in that game on five three-pointers, knocking down four in a row in a 19-3 run in the first half to help the Bobcats overcome an early 12-0 deficit. Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) had his second career double-double as well with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Bundu has been a major success story for the Bobcats in recent weeks. After averaging 3.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in the first 10 games, he has exploded to average 10.0 points and 9.7 rebounds over the last seven contests, including a 23-point, 15-rebound effort at Maine on Dec. 29. Bundu is coming off a 16-point, eight-rebound performance on Sunday against Rider, grabbing five of his rebounds on the offensive end. For the season, Bundu has pulled down more than half of his rebounds on the offensive glass (61 of 112) and has been especially dominant at that end in the last seven games, pulling down 40 of his 68 rebounds on offense (5.7 per game). His efforts have helped Quinnipiac ascend to first in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (17.6 per game), almost a full rebound ahead of second-place West Virginia (16.7 per game).
Senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) continues to lead the Bobcats in scoring at 14.8 points per game after scoring 12 of his 14 in the second half against Rider on Sunday. McLean has been in double figures in 14 of his 16 games this season, including his first eight career contests before being held to nine at Oregon State on Dec. 21. McLean has been a second-half player for most of the season, including the first game against Monmouth, when he scored all 15 of his points after halftime after sitting with two quick fouls in the first half. He also had 10 of his 12 at Canisius in the second half and 17 of his 21 at Niagara after intermission.
Monmouth is led by diminutive Justin Robinson, one of the leaders in the MAAC Player of the Year race. The 5-8 Robinson is scoring 20.6 points per game, while also adding 3.5 assists. Freshman guard Micah Seaborn (12.8 ppg) also figures to be in the MAAC Rookie of the Year race, while senior guard Deon Jones (10.5 ppg) is also in double figures for the Hawks.
After facing Monmouth, the Bobcats will be right back at home to host Niagara on Saturday at 2 p.m. For ticket information for the Monmouth doubleheader, the home game with Niagara, and all Quinnipiac home games, contact the TD Bank Sports Center Box Office at 203-582-3905 or visit us online at QuinnipiacBobcats.com
