HAMDEN, Connecticut – The nationally-ranked No. 4/4 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team scored two third period goals on Saturday afternoon to shut out the Robert Morris Colonials, 2-0, and set the new program record for the longest unbeaten streak in program history at 17 games.
Quinnipiac has gone 14-0-3 over its 17-game unbeaten streak, the second longest streak in the country to Boston College, whose streak is up to 23 games with a 23-0-0 record. The Bobcats improved their record to 19-1-4 (10-1-3 ECAC Hockey), tied for the third most wins in the country with Northeastern, while the Colonials lost their second straight game for just the second time this season to fall to 12-8-4 (4-3-3 CHA).
Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) remained even with Wisconsin's Ann-Renee Desbiens as she recorded her 11th shutout of the season while tying Desbiens and Boston College's Katie Burt with 19 victories. Rossman recorded 14 saves in the victory for the Bobcats.
Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) scored the game-winning power play goal early in the third period for her eighth tally of the season, and second on the power play. With 22 points this season, Connery moves up to 87 points in her career, looking to become the fourth member of the 100-point club in program history.
Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) added the first empty-net goal of her career for her 20th goal of the season. Cianfarano's 20 goal season is the fourth in program history, a feat accomplish twice by Kelly Babstock in 2010-11 and 2012-13, and once by Shiann Darkangelo in 2013-14.
Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) tallied a pair of assists for her 10th and 11th helpers of the season, leading the team in points against Robert Morris on Saturday. Brown's two-assist game was her second of the season while her two-point afternoon was her fifth of the season. Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) capped off the weekend with her third assist of the season to give her nine points on the season.
The Bobcats outshot the Colonials 27-14 in the contest, including a strong 13-5 showing in the first period. The Bobcats also scored a power play goal for the third straight game and fourth out of the last five as they went 1 for 5 on the man advantage. The Bobcats also killed off all three Colonial power plays, the fourth straight game in which Quinnipiac was perfect on the penalty kill.
Rossman preserved the scoreless tie with 4:16 to play in the second period when she stopped a penalty shot from Robert Morris' Mikaela Lowater. Lowater earned the penalty shot for the Colonials after she was hooked by Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) on a shorthanded breakaway with the Bobcats on the power play. Lowater skated in on Rossman, taking the puck to her forehand but Rossman cut off the angle to save the first penalty shot of her career. The last time the Bobcats defended a penalty shot came on Nov. 1, 2013 against the Cornell Big Red.
Following the penalty shot, the Colonials took another penalty to send the Bobcats on a five on three power play, but the Bobcats managed just one shot.
Connery gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead 3:13 into the third period with a power play goal just 14 seconds after Robert Morris' Amanda Pantaleo was whistled for interference. Quinnipiac cycled the puck around the offensive zone before hitting Brown with a pass on the right boards. Brown quickly swiped a pass in one motion to Turner in the slot who tapped the puck to Connery on the doorstep. Connery slid the puck across the ice past Robert Morris goaltender Jessica Dodds' right pad and into the net for the goal.
Cianfarano added the Bobcats' empty-net goal with 13.7 seconds left in the third period to add to the Bobcats lead after chasing down a pass from Brown and firing the puck from the left face-off circle into the empty net.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team has a quick turnaround after today's game when they welcome the Boston University Terriers to High Point Solutions Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 11 A.M. in their first annual "Kid's Day" game.
