BOBCATS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY
The Quinnipiac men's soccer team begins MAAC play with its home contest against Saint Peter's on Saturday, starting its quest for a fourth straight regular season league title. The Bobcats concluded non-league play with a 1-1 tie against St. John's on the road on Tuesday evening.
FOUR-SHADOWING
The Bobcats begin conference play this weekend after going 0-5-2 in a difficult non-conference schedule. The slow start is not necessarily a bad omen, though, Quinnipiac started 2-4-1 in 2012, 1-3-3 in 2013 and 1-4-1 in 2014, before going on to win all three conference titles (with a combined 22-2-6 league record).
SWEET SEVENTEEN
Quinnipiac enters the 2015 season with a 17-game unbeaten streak against MAAC opponents (including 14 MAAC contests and three MAAC Tournament games). The Bobcats are 10-0-7 overall against league foes since their last defeat, at Monmouth on Oct. 23, 2013, which is the only loss the team has suffered in its two years in the league. Dating back to their final year in the NEC, the Bobcats are 20-1-9 in their last 31 games against conference opponents, including 20-1-5 in the regular season (all four postseason games in that span have been ties decided on penalty kicks).
LAST TIME OUT
The Bobcats dominated the first half but settled for a 1-1 tie on the road against St. John's on Tuesday evening. Senior defender Justin Kody gave Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when he headed in a cross from freshman midfielder Matt Taylor (pictured), who picked up his team-best second assist. After the Bobcats outshot St. John's 6-1 in the first half, the Red Storm regrouped at the start of the second half and knotted the score up on a goal in the 52nd minute. From there, the game was a stalemate as neither team could break the deadlock. Junior goalie Triston Henry had three saves for the Bobcats, who finished with an 11-7 edge in shots, while two St. John's goalies combined for two saves.
SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS
Saint Peter's visits Hamden with a 2-3-1 overall record after defeating LIU 3-1 on Sunday. The Peacocks opened the season with a 3-0 win over UMass, and snapped a four-game winless streak with their win over LIU. All three losses have come on the road (to Robert Morris, Pittsburgh and Binghamton), while they are 2-0-1 on their home field. Ezequiel Cei leads the Saint Peter's offense with four goals and an assist, while Louis Mobbs has three goals and Luke Fairlamb has a team-best four assists. Jamie Cleland has seen all of the action in goal and has a 1.28 goals against average and a .733 save percentage.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING
Quinnipiac earned a 3-0 road win over Saint Peter's a year ago, which improved the Bobcats to 4-0-3 in the MAAC. Raphael Carvalho scored a first-half goal, while Machel Baker stretched the lead to 2-0 in the second half and sophomore John-John Diaz capped off the scoring with his first career goal off a pass from Ryan Scheiderman.
MAGIC NUMBER TWO
Four upperclassmen on the Bobcats scored their second career goals in the span of less than a week. In a game against Holy Cross on Sept. 12, sophomore John-John Diaz found the net for the second time in his career (his first came against Saint Peter's last year). Against Yale on Sept. 19, both senior Tobias Esche and junior Ryan Scheiderman scored their second career goals. Esche slammed home a penalty kick for the Bobcats first goal while Scheiderman scored in traffic inside the box with 20 seconds remaining. Finally, on Sept. 22 at St. John's, senior defender Justin Kody found the net for the second time in his career when he headed in a cross in the opening half.
DALLY'S FIRST TALLY
Freshman forward Rashawn Dally cored his first career goal in a 2-1 loss at Holy Cross on Sept. 12. Dally received the ball in open space and fired a strike through the keeper's legs for the score. The goal also marked the first of the season for Quinnipiac.
CAREER HIGH
Junior goalie Triston Henry registered a career high 12 saves in a loss to Brown on Sept. 4. The Bobcat goalkeeper stopped five shots in the first half before tallying seven more in the second frame. He now has 34 saves on the year in the first seven contests.
HENRY HOLDS BACK HUSKIES
Former UConn Husky, Triston Henry, was dominant against his former team on Aug. 31. The junior transfer recorded his first career shutout with a couple huge diving stops in the latter stages of the game. Henry finished with six saves on the day.
UNBEATEN STREAK SNAPPED
Quinnipiac lost its first game in nearly a full year against Boston College in the season opener on Aug. 28. The Bobcats finished the 2014 season with 13 straight games without a loss. QU's last defeat came at the hands of Holy Cross on September 17, 2014.
THE THORN IN THEIR PAW
Monmouth, which joined Quinnipiac in moving from the NEC to the MAAC in 2013, has given the Bobcats their only two conference losses in the last three years (an NEC loss in 2012 and a MAAC loss in 2013). Against everyone else, Quinnipiac is 22-0-5 in conference play since the start of the 2012 season. Including the conference tournament, the Bobcats are 0-2-2 against Monmouth in the last three years and 22-0-8 against everyone else.
FRESH FACES
Three Bobcats made their first career starts for Quinnipiac in the season opener against Boston College. Junior goalkeeper Triston Henry, freshman midfielder Oscar Evans, and freshman forward Rashawn Dally all made their debuts in the starting lineup. Fellow freshman Matt Taylor missed that contest, but has since moved into the starting lineup to give the Bobcats four new faces in the regular 11.
FIRST GAME JITTERS
After falling to Boston College 1-0 on opening day, the Bobcats have now lost their season opener for the sixth consecutive year. The last time they did not fall in the first game came on September 5, 2009 in a 1-1 tie against Yale.
