NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team dropped a non-conference game to Yale on Saturday night. In front of a large crowd at Reese Stadium in New Haven, the Bobcats were unable to overcome a first half two goal deficit and fell to the Bulldogs, 3-2. Senior Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany) and junior Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey) scored for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats started off strong in the first half, recording two shots in the first 10 minutes while not giving up any sort of look to the opposition. Freshman Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) registered the first two shots for Quinnipiac, but both were blocked by Bulldogs. Taylor had a good look at net off a Max Rothenbuecher (Munich, Germany) corner kick in the 6th minute, but his shot was stopped inside the box.
With 30 minutes remaining in the opening frame, Yale missed a great opportunity to take an early lead. A Bulldog saw the ball drop to his feet inside the box about 12 yards out, but fired a strike high of the wide open net.
In the 31st minute, Quinnipiac goalkeeper Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) came out to stop Yale's Ollie Iselin on the right side of the box, but Iselin was able to chip the keeper to break the tie. The Bobcat defenders were unable to prevent the goal as the ball bounced high into the net.
Just three minutes later, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 advantage with their second goal on consecutive shots. Josh Totte received the ball from the left corner and fired a strike off the far post, beating a diving Henry for the score.
Yale outshot the Bobcats, six to four in the opening 45 minutes and three to zero in shots on goal. Quinnipiac tallied three corner kicks to the Bulldogs' zero.
The Bobcats came out of the break working hard on the offensive end, putting pressure on the Bulldogs' keeper. In the 57th minute, the Bobcats were granted a corner kick and Rothenbucher sent a beautiful cross into the box. Senior Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealander) found the ball on a header but sent it wide of the net. Justin Kody (Northborough, Massachusetts) came through on the rebound but his attempt was saved by the Yale goalkeeper.
After all their hard work in the second frame, the Bobcats were finally rewarded a penalty kick with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Esche slammed home his first goal of the season with a strike into the right side of the net as the keeper dove to the left. The Germany native's second career tally brought the score to 2-1.
In the 76th minute, Yale answered with their third goal of the day. Archie Kinnane sent a corner kick into the box as teammate Dyla Onderdonk-Snow volleyed the ball into the back of the net.
With just 20 seconds remaining, freshman Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) found Scheiderman inside the box for the Bobcats' second goal. From 10 yards out, the junior smashed home his first goal of the season, but QU ran out of time looking for the a third score to tie the game.
