Quinnipiac| New Hampshire
Joy to the World
The nationally-ranked No. 4/4 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team wraps up its fantastic first half of the season Friday night when the Bobcats host the New Hampshire Wildcats at High Point Solutions Arena with puck drop scheduled for 7 P.M.
The Gift
Quinnipiac's Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is in the midst of its annual "Holiday Toy Drive" to benefit Hamden Community Services as well as the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital. SAAC is asking for new, unwrapped toys to be donated as they are looking to help over 400 families this holiday season. Donations can be made at Friday night's women's ice hockey game as well as Saturday night's men's ice hockey game against Boston University.
All-Time Against New Hampshire
Quinnipiac and New Hampshire have a very short history between the two teams, playing just 11 games over 15 seasons with the Wildcats holding the advantage with an 8-2-1 record. The Bobcats have fared much better in recent history, winning the last two games between the two teams and posting a 2-1-1 record in the last four dating back to Feb. 8, 2011. New Hampshire won the first seven matchups from 2001 through 2009. Last October, the Bobcats knocked off the Wildcats 4-1 behind goals from Meghan Turner, Shiann Darkangelo, Taylar Cianfarano and Danielle Marmer. Chelsea Laden made 15 saves, but allowed her first goal of the season to stop her shutout streak at 267:33, a record which stood until last weekend.
Scouting the Wildcats
New Hampshire comes into this weekend's matchup with a five-game unbeaten streak and a four-game winning streak, having not lost since dropping a 4-1 decision to Providence on Nov. 22. In the streak, New Hampshire went 1-0-1 against Rensselaer before sweeping Merrimack and defeating Dartmouth on Dec. 8, 3-2. These are the longest streaks of the season for New Hampshire, who had lost seven straight games to open up the season and have gone 7-6-1 since their start. Jonna Curtis leads the team in all three major offensive categories with nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points. Amy Boucher is second on the team with eight goals and 13 points while defenseman Amy Schlagel is third on the team with six goals and 11 points. Forward Sara Carlson is also tied for third on the team with 11 points while her nine assists are second to Curtis. Five players have scored at least three goals while just four players have recorded more than 10 points. Freshman Kyra Smith has taken the reigns as the starting goaltender with 12 games played, going 6-5-1 to lead the Wildcats. Smith has a 2.48 GAA and .900 save percentage, making 270 saves on 300 shots this season, seeing an average of 25 shots per game. Special teams has been a bit of an issue for the Wildcats, with the power play netting 11 goals in 65 chances for 16.9 percent but the penalty kill has stopped just 48 of 63 chances at 76.2 percent.

Bobcats in the Polls
For the 11th consecutive week this season, the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team was ranked in the top 10 of both the USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, ranking fourth for the second consecutive week. The Bobcats have been ranked in the top 10 of the USCHO.com Poll for 56 consecutive weeks. In this week's poll, Quinnipiac is one of just two schools to have both their men's and women's ice hockey teams ranked in the top four of the USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey Poll, joining Boston College as the only other school.
Bobcats in the Pairwise
The Bobcats continued to hang out as one of the top teams in the country as they moved up to No. 3 in the PairWise Rankings, passing Minnesota who was swept by Wisconsin this past weekend. The Bobcats are the highest ranked ECAC Hockey team followed by Clarkson (No. 5), Princeton (T-No. 6), Harvard (No. 9), Colgate (T-No. 10), Cornell (No. 12), and St. Lawrence (No. 13). The USCHO.com Pairwise Ranking attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I women's hockey tournament.
ECAC Hockey Weekly Awards
Melissa Samoskevich's rookie campaign continues to be rewarded by the league as she was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the second time in her career. Samoskevich was previously honored on Nov. 3 as the rookie of the week and was also honored as the league's rookie of the month earlier this season.
Deck the Harvard's
The Bobcats fought to the end on Dec. 5 against the Harvard Crimson, getting the monkey off their back and winning 2-1 in overtime. Quinnipiac's win over Harvard was its first since Nov. 12, 2010 and all three wins have come at High Point Solutions Arena. Even more interesting, the Bobcats last three games to the Crimson by the score of 2-1, with two of them coming in overtime. Harvard win 2-1 in overtime in the ECAC Semifinals before knocking the Bobcats out of their first NCAA Tournament, winning 5-0.
Carol of the Goals
Quinnipiac put up a touchdown on Dartmouth on Friday night for their first seven-goal performance of the season. In each of the past four seasons, the Bobcats have had at least one game where they scored seven goal, and are 4-0 when scoring at least five goals. The Bobcats are currently seventh in the country with a 3.24 goals per game average.
Jingle Goals
Against Dartmouth on Friday night, the Bobcats had six players record at least two goals in the game for the first time in just over six years. The last time the Bobcats had that many multiple point scorers, seven different players had at least two points against Sacred Heart in an 11-1 Nutmeg Classic victory on Nov. 28, 2009.
Miracle on 34th "Streak"
The Bobcats have been streaking as of late, as the Bobcats are riding a 10-game unbeaten streak and a seven-game winning streak. This marks the second straight season with an unbeaten streak of this magnitude, as the Bobcats rode a program record 16-game unbeaten streak for almost the entire first half of the 2014-15 season before falling to Harvard in the final game of the first half. The current unbeaten streak of 10 games is the second longest in program history. With a win against New Hampshire, Quinnipiac would tie the program record for longest winning streak at eight games set during last season. In 2015-16, the Bobcats had two separate winning streaks of at least seven games.
It's a Wonderful First Half
Quinnipiac has been one of the best teams in the country in the first half of a season, with their 13-1-3 record this year already tied for the same record at the break the Bobcats had last season. In the past six seasons, the Bobcats have finished the first half with at least 13 wins. The Bobcats are looking to tie their program record of wins in the first half of 14, which they accomplished during the 2013-14 season when they went 14-2-5. If the Bobcats beat the Wildcats on Friday, their .861 winning percentage would be the best first half winning percentage in program history.
The Defense Express
The Bobcats defense continues to get better and better, as they allowed just two goals against the Big Green and the Crimson. Throughout the season, the Bobcats have allowed more than two goals in a single game three times, and not since their only loss of the season to Yale on Oct. 31. Since that loss, the Bobcats have allowed six goals in 10 games, including five shutouts. Quinnipiac has the third lowest GAA in the country at 1.12 and allow the third fewest shots on goal per game at 18.53. The Bobcats have allowed the second fewest shots on goal in the country with 315 while their 19 goals allowed are the third fewest allowed.
PK All the Way
Despite going to the box more often this season than in 2015-16, the Bobcats have been able to kill off nearly every penalty this season. The Bobcats penalty kill percentage is the third best in the nation at 93.9 percent, behind Wisconsin's absurd 98.0 percent penalty kill and Princeton at 95.1 percent.
Samoskevich is Coming to Town
Samoskevich continues to shine for the Bobcats as she netted three goals this past weekend in memorable fashion. Against Dartmouth on Dec. 4, Samoskevich scored two goals for her first career multiple-goal game as a Bobcat. The following day against Harvard, Samoskevich pounded home the game-winning goal for the Bobcats, her fourth of the season to tie Clarkson's Olivia Howe for the most in ECAC Hockey. Samoskevich currently leads all league freshmen with eight goals and 19 points. Samoskevich is in the midst of a three-game goal scoring and point scoring streak.
Let Her Score, Let Her Score, Let Her Score
Taylar Cianfarano is scoring points at a blistering pace as she is just one goal, two assists and three points away from tying her totals in her entire freshman season. Cianfarano had one goal and three assists over the weekend in the Bobcats third straight sweep, posting back-to-back multiple point games, and third straight overall. She has seven points over her last three games, and has recorded 13 points in the last seven games. Overall, Cianfarano has 16 goals and 11 assists for 27 points this season, leading the team in all three categories. Cianfarano is tied for fifth in the nation with 10 multiple-point games this season.
Rossman Around the Christmas Tree
Despite giving up a goal for the first time in three weekends, Sydney Rossman set the program record for shutout streak with 296:42 without giving up a goal, breaking Chelsea Laden's mark of 267:33 from last season. Rossman's spanned from 16:11 mark of the second period at Princeton on Nov. 14 until the 11:55 mark of the second period against Dartmouth on Dec. 4. Rossman is third in the country, and first in the conference with a 1.10 GAA, 13 wins and six shutouts, and is fourth in the conference with a .940 save percentage.
All I Want for Christmas Are Two Goals
Taryn Baumgardt had a night to remember against Dartmouth on Dec. 4 as she scored a career-high two goals, both on the power play, and three points for the Bobcats. Baumgardt factored into all three power play goals on the evening with either a goal or an assist for the best offensive game of her career. Prior to Saturday night, Baumgardt had only recorded two points once in her career, at Princeton three weeks prior. Baumgardt's eight points her a new career high, while her two goals and six assists each match her previous career high.
Randi Cane
One of the top contributing freshman, Randi Marcon picked up yet another goal for the Bobcats for her third of season, as well as her fifth point. Marcon also picked up an assist for the Bobcats for the second multiple-point game of her career. In both games that Marcon has scored a goal, the Bobcats have scored at least five goals as a team as she scored a pair of goals at St. Lawrence on Nov. 21.
A Nicole Brown Christmas
Nicole Brown put up her first multiple-assist game of the season on Friday night on her way to her second multiple-point game of the season. Brown now has two goals and six assists for eight points in the 2015-16 campaign, looking for her fourth straight season of at least 10 points. Brown's two-assist game against Dartmouth was her second such game of her career, and first since Oct. 17, 2014 against the Maine Black Bears.
