Quinnipiac | Iona
Hamden, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team returns to conference play this weekend when it hosts preseason MAAC favorite Iona for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, which will be televised live on Sportsnet New York (SNY).
The Bobcats enter the new year at 4-7 on the season after a tough 98-95 overtime loss to Maine on Tuesday, after senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) tied the score on a three-pointer with 17.3 seconds left. However, a win over Iona could move the Bobcats near the top of the standings in the MAAC at the start of the year. Quinnipiac comes in at 1-1 in the league after splitting a road trip to Buffalo on Dec. 4-5, while Iona is one of two teams tied for first at 2-0 (along with Saint Peter's, which is idle on Saturday),
Despite the loss at Maine, several players gave noteworthy performances, led by freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.). Bundu came into the game with career highs of eight points and nine rebounds, but shattered both numbers with 23 points and 15 rebounds. He had 11 of his rebounds on the offensive end, out of 24 offensive boards total for the team, which moved the Bobcats into first place in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (18.09 - barely ahead of West Virginia at 18.08). Quinnipiac led the nation in offensive rebounding for four years in a row before West Virginia snapped the streak last year (although the Bobcats still led the nation in rebounding margin and total rebounds).
Senior guard James Ford, Jr. (Hopewell, Va.) also came through with three clutch three-pointers, one with two minutes left in regulation to key a comeback and two in overtime, to finish with 13 points. Sophomore guard Ayron Hutton (Virginia Beach, Va. - pictured) added a season-high 12 points off the bench, including a three-pointer to open the overtime scoring, while junior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill.) had his second straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Iona has a 3-2 lead in the series between the schools, including a sweep last year, although the game at the TD Bank Sports Center came right down to the wire with the Gaels prevailing 60-57 when the Bobcats missed a buzzer-beating three to tie. Iona also won 81-73 in the first meeting in New Rochelle, despite a career high 16 points and eight assists from Hutton. The teams first met in the Paradise Jam in 2012 when Quinnipiac was still in the Northeast Conference, a game which saw the Bobcats prevail 98-92 in overtime (before falling to state rival Connecticut in double overtime in the semifinals).
