QU Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie With Marist

Hamden, Conn. - Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, N.J. - pictured) scored with 25 seconds left in the first half to stake the Quinnipiac men's soccer team to a 1-0 lead before the Bobcats settled for a 1-1 tie with MAAC co-leader Marist on Wednesday afternoon at QU Soccer Field.
With the tie, Quinnipiac moves to 0-6-4 overall and 0-1-2 in the MAAC after back-to-back ties (including a 1-1 draw at Niagara on Saturday). The Bobcats are also now 20-2-11 in their last 33 games against conference opponents, dating back to the 2012 season in the NEC. Marist, which came in tied for first in the MAAC at 3-0 with Monmouth, sees its record move to 5-5-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the league.
The game appeared headed for the half in a 0-0 deadlock, before the Bobcats struck in the waning moments to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) set the play up when he got the ball 25 yards out on the right side and made a cut to the middle. As Scheiderman made a run from the left side, Dally slotted a perfectly placed through ball to him behind the Marist defense. Scheiderman had time to size up his angles against onrushing Marist goalie Mark Rajovic and slipped a low shot into the net for a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
Quinnipiac held a 9-1 edge in shots in the half as they were able to control most of the play in the opening stanza. However, Marist was able to regroup at intermission and scored the equalizer 11:09 in off a free kick. Kevin Kappock took the kick outside the right edge of the box and found Dylan MacVane at the top of the six, who laid out with a diving header to knot the game up 1-1.
Each team had a great chance for the go-ahead goal in regulation. Cameron Harr hit the post for Marist from six yards out just five minutes after the Red Foxes had equalized. Senior forward Tanor Jobe (Uxbridge, Mass.) nearly scored with 20 minutes left, but his shot from the top of the six yard box was barely tipped over the bar by a falling Rajovic to keep the game deadlocked.
Scheiderman almost had a winning goal in the final minute of regulation to add to his goal in the final minute of the first half, but his blast from inside the top edge of the box missed wide of the right post by about a foot. Neither team generated many scoring chances in overtime, as each goalie made one routine save in the second extra session before the game concluded with a 1-1 draw.
Quinnipiac ended the day with a 16-9 edge in shots, as Rajovic had six saves for the Red Foxes, compared to three for Henry. Jobe led the Bobcats with four shots, two of which were saved.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Saturday when it travels to face Monmouth, which entered today's player as the other MAAC co-leader at 3-0 in conference.
