QU Men's Soccer Falls On Road At Monmouth

West Long Branch, N.J. – Dave Nigro had a goal and an assist as the Monmouth men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 3-1 home win over Quinnipiac on Saturday evening at Hesse Field.
With the win, Monmouth moves to 8-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the MAAC, staying in a tie with Marist for first place. Quinnipiac, which received a goal on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute from senior defender Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany), suffered only its fourth conference loss in the last four years (three of which have come to Monmouth), as it falls to 0-7-4 overall and 0-2-2 in the MAAC.
The Hawks took the lead for good in the 11th minute, when Colin Stripling played a cross into the box that left Dave Nigro alone with a 1v1 against Quinnipiac junior goalie Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario). Nigro placed his shot inside the right post, tallying his fourth goal of the season and putting Monmouth ahead 1-0.
Sophomore midfielder Max Rothenbucher (Munich, Germany) had a solid chance to equalize for the Bobcats in the 36th minute, but had his shot saved by Monmouth goalie Eric Klenofsky for a corner kick. The Hawks defense was able to clear the ensuing corner away to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Monmouth was then able to tack on an insurance goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half after Quinnipiac was whistled for a foul in the box. David Acuna Camacho took the ensuing penalty kick and slotted it home with 36:22 left to push the lead to 2-0. Just over 10 minutes later, Nigro added an assist to his total as he passed the ball ahead to Derek Luke, who finished from the top of the 18 with 25:33 left to make the score 3-0.
The Hawks, who had allowed only three goals in the nine previous games coming in, lost the clean sheet with 18:53 left when they committed a foul on a Quinnipiac corner kick. Esche took the penalty kick and put it away to cut the Monmouth lead to 3-1, but the Bobcats could come no closer.
Total shots ended up even at 12 apiece, while the Bobcats had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Klenofsky and Henry each finished with three saves in goal.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Manhattan for another MAAC road contest, beginning at 7 p.m.
