Niagara University, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac men's soccer team played down a man for the entire second half and overtime and came away with a 1-1 tie on the road at Niagara on Saturday afternoon in a MAAC contest.
With the tie, the Bobcats are now 0-6-3 overall on the year, and 0-1-1 in the MAAC, while Niagara sees its record move to 1-8-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the MAAC.
Sophomore Max Rothenbucher (Munich, Germany - pictured) gave Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, when he cranked a highlight reel goal from 30 yards out that found the upper-right corner for his first tally of the season at the 13:16 mark.
Niagara was able to answer 12 minutes later to even the score up at 1-1 as Alex Dimitriu finished inside the box at the far post after a feed from Fabrizio Chiari. With 30 seconds left in the first half, the Bobcats fortunes were dealt a blow as Rothenbucher was awarded a red card while Chiari was given a yellow, leaving Quinnipiac shorthanded for the entire second half.
Despite playing a man down, the Bobcats defense held tough in the second half, led by senior center backs Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany) and Erik Panzer, Junior goalie Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ont.) only needed to make one save in the second 45 minutes, while senior Justin Kody (Northborough, Mass.) had a bid for the winner in the 82nd minute at the other end, but his shot was saved by Niagara keeper Colin Hanley.
In the early stages of the second overtime, Henry was called into action as Niagara threatened off a corner kick with Nelson Cruz getting to a rebound after the Purple Eagles' first effort was blocked, but Henry was there to make the save to keep the game deadlocked. One final effort from the Purple Eagles went high with two minutes left as the teams settled for a point apiece.
Niagara finished with a 14-9 edge in shots on the day, while each team had three attempts on frame. Henry had two saves for Quinnipiac, while Hanley matched him with two for Niagara, which earned its first point all time in the series with Quinnipiac, which came into the weekend 4-0 all-time against the Purple Eagles.
Quinnipiac will be back in action when it returns home to host Marist on Wednesday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m.
