Hamden, Conn. – The Canisius Men's Soccer team scored in the 18th minute and didn't allow a shot on target the rest of the way as the Golden Griffins took a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at QU Soccer Field.
The win was the first of the year for Canisius in MAAC play, as it improves to 4-8-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Quinnipiac, which picked up its first MAAC win on Wednesday at Manhattan (2-0) falls to 1-8-4 overall and 1-3-2 in the conference.
Quinnipiac fought until the end, as the Bobcats had three shots in the final four minutes as they tried to get the equalizer. Senior defender Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealand - pictured) came forward to get on the back end of a loose ball outside of the box in the 87th minute and sent a rocket just over the crossbar. With a minute to go, freshman Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) cracked a volley from the top of the box that would have been a dangerous strike, but it was deflected by a lunging Canisius defender out for a corner kick. Senior defender Nick Lasewicz had one final chance on a loose ball off the ensuing corner kick, but his shot went high.
The Golden Griffins struck for an early goal on a quick counter after a turnover in the midfield area. Eric Strauchen had the ball near the left sideline and was able to serve a bending ball into the penalty area. The ball took a hop before finding the foot of Lucian Preis, who one-timed a half-volley from eight yards that bounced inside the six-yard box and tucked into the left side of the net.
Preis almost duplicated the feat on a more difficult volley less than 10 minutes later, as he wound up on a shot at the top of the 18 off a Quinnipiac clearance attempt. However, his low shot went wide of the right post by inches to keep the score 1-0. The Bobcats had few first-half opportunities against a stout Golden Griffin defense, as senior Tanor Jobe (Uxbridge, Mass.) had the only shot on target for Quinnipiac, which was saved early by Andrew Coughlin, his only save of the match.
Quinnipiac held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks as it had the better of the possession game, but Canisius was stout defensively throughout, finishing with a 9-8 edge in shots. Junior goalie Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ont.) had three saves for the Bobcats, one of which came with one second left as he stopped a breakaway before the rebound was put in after the final buzzer.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts local rival Fairfield at 2 p.m. before its home finale on Saturday against Iona at 2 p.m., which will be Senior Day for the program's nine-member senior class. The Bobcats Class of 2016 has won three regular season conference titles in its first three years (one in the NEC and two in the MAAC).
