Hamden, Conn. - Junior goalie Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) had four saves, including a key one from point blank in the first overtime, as the Quinnipiac men's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon at QU Soccer Field.
With the tie, Quinnipiac moves to 1-8-5 overall and 1-3-3 in the MAAC, while Fairfield sees its record move to 4-4-6 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play.
Henry had the save of the match 4:50 into the first overtime, when Fairfield came forward off a counter after the Bobcats had two quality chances in its offensive end off of crosses. On the first Bobcat chance, freshman forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) barely missed getting his foot on the back end a cross inside the six-yard box, while on the second one, sophomore forward William Pustari (New Haven, Conn.) saw his one-timer miss wide of the left post by inches.
Fairfield then went to the other end and played the ball up the right side. A cross into space found Ben Wingall all alone inside the top edge of the six, and Wingall hit a sharp one-timer low that appeared destined to be the game-winner. Henry went down to make the reflex save, though, and Quinnipiac was able to clear away the rebound.
The Bobcats had to avoid one final dangerous play in the game's final moments, as Fairfield set up a free kick from 40 yards with just six seconds left in the second overtime. The Stags played a long ball which bounced off a pair of heads before Kevin Byrne hit a volley barely wide that was just after the final horn.
The game ended with a flurry, but started slowly, as neither team took a shot in the first 20 minutes of the game. Fairfield's Martin Lindgren nearly broke the scoreless deadlock with a one-timer off a free kick from 10 yards out. Henry dove to his right, though, and was able to deflect the ball around the post to keep the game 0-0.
Pustari came off the bench in the first half and ended up with a great chance in the 42nd minute, but Matt Turner dove to his right for one of his seven saves on the day.Senior defender Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealand) also had a bid for a highlight goal at the end of regulation for the Bobcats, but his bicycle kick was saved near the right post by Turner.
Ultimately, the defenses both held their clean sheets, as Panzer and fellow seniors Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany) and Stevenson Hawkey (Pennington, N.J. - pictured) played a solid 110 minutes in front of Henry. Quinnipiac ended with a narrow 14-13 edge in shots, while Fairfield had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Bobcats will return to action on Saturday for their final home game, taking on Iona at 2 p.m. It will also be Senior Day for the program's nine-member senior class, including Panzer, Esche, Hawkey, as well as graduate student Joe Da Graca (Shelton, Conn.), Simon Brossier (Jallais, France), James Greco (Long Valley, N.J.), Tanor Jobe (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Nick Lasewicz (Southbury, Conn.(.
