Riverdale, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) scored his first career goal in the third minute of the game on a 25-yard blast, and senior defender Nick Lasewicz (Southbury, Conn. - pictured) scored his first career goal in the second half to give the Bobcats some insurance as the Quinnipiac men's soccer team captured a 2-0 road win over Manhattan on Wednesday evening.
The win improves Quinnipiac to 1-7-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the MAAC, while improving the Bobcats to 23-4-8 in the last four seasons in conference games (three in the MAAC, and the 2012 season in the Northeast Conference). Manhattan slips to 2-7-1 overall and 2-3 in conference play with the loss.
Taylor gave Quinnipiac all the offense it would need on the first shot of the game just 2:49 into the contest. The goal featured a pair of the Bobcat freshmen connecting, as freshman midfielder Colton Grob (Suffield, Conn.) played the ball to Taylor outside the box, and Taylor cranked a long-range effort into the net for his first collegiate goal.
The rest of the first half featured tight marking, as neither goalie made a save before intermission. The Bobcats all-senior defense, led by senior center backs Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany) and Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealand), and senior outside backs Lasewicz and Stevenson Hawkey (Pennington, N.J.) blocked three of the five Manhattan shot attempts in the first half, before they could even reach goalkeeper Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario).
The second half opened up a bit in the 55th minute, as Manhattan goalie R.J. Noll saved a solid effort from freshman forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) over the line for a corner kick, then saved a header off the corner from Hawkey to keep the score 1-0. Henry made his first save of the contest in the 69th minute on a shot from Timmy O'Driscoll and added another one on a header in the 76th minute to preserve the shutout.
Lasewicz then helped salt away the first win of the season for the Bobcats when he got loose in the box in the closing minutes. Junior midfielder Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, N.J.) played the ball in and Lasewicz picked out the lower-left corner to break into the scoring column for the first time in his four-year career.
Henry finished the day with two saves for Quinnipiac to get his second shutout as a member of the Bobcats, along with a 0-0 tie against Connecticut (his former team) back in August. Manhattan held a narrow 12-10 edge in shot attempts on the day.
The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday when they host Canisius for a 3 p.m. contest at QU Soccer Field.
