Quinnipiac Downs Canisius in Seven Innings, 12-2

Buffalo, New York – With the series on the line, the Bobcats showed out, defeating the Canisius Golden Griffins, 12-2 (7 innings) to earn their second MAAC series win of the season. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 16-21 overall and 9-9 in conference play, good for eighth place.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Golden Griffins got on the board first as Thomas Zwirecki hit a solo home run over the center field wall.
Quinnipiac got the run back in the top of the second inning as Alex Irizarry doubled home Jack Balcer to even the game at one run apiece.
The Bobcats came up in the third inning, looking to take their first lead of the contest, and did just that. Kyle Garbowski got the scoring started in the inning with a solo home run over the right field fence. Later in the inning, with one runner on base, Jack Balcer unloaded on a pitch and hit his first home run as a Bobcat to extend the lead to 4-1.
The game remained 4-1 until Jack Balcer stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning and delivered with his second home run of the game to make it a four-run lead for the Bobcats. In the home half of the fifth inning, the Golden Griffins got a run back to make it a 5-2 ballgame.
Quinnipiac headed into the top half of the seventh inning with a three-run lead and looked to improve on that. Jack Balcer got a run on the board in the seventh inning as he reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Garbowski to come in to score. Later in the inning, two more runs would come in to score on a James Marino single, making it a six-run lead. Marino would come around to score on an Ian Nilsen double as the Bobcats stretched their lead to 9-2. The Bobcats were not done as Cole Constable brought home Nilsen on a double to left field, making it a 10-2 game. With two runners on and two outs, Kyle Garbowski doubled to deep right field, which scored two more runs to put the Bobcats up ten.
Joseph Hiller came on to pitch in the seventh inning and he shut down the Golden Griffins to seal the 12-2 win in seven innings for the Bobcats.

NEWS AND NOTES
- The Quinnipiac offense exploded for twelve runs on fourteen hits, with eight Bobcats recording hits in the series finale. All nine starters reached base safely in the contest.
- Five different Bobcats recorded multiple hits in the ten-run victory over the Golden Griffins.
- Jack Balcer had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored.
- Balcer hit home runs in back-to-back at-bats, giving him his first two home runs in a Bobcat uniform.
- Kyle Garbowski went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
- Garbowski ranks second on the team with a .301 batting average and is one of three Bobcats hitting .300 or higher.
- Alex Irizarry picked up two hits in the win with an RBI. Irizarry ranks first on the club with 26 RBIs this season.
- Ian Nilsen started his tenth game of the year and went 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI. In 12 appearances this season, Nilsen holds a .294 batting average with three RBIs on the year.
- Christian Smith recorded two hits in the series finale. Since returning to the lineup on March 18th, Smith is hitting .341 with 16 RBIs and twelve doubles.
- James Marino and Cole Constable both picked up a hit and an RBI in the win. Brendan Edvardsen finished the contest with one hit in four at-bats.
- Nick Balcom had a tremendous start for the Bobcats, going six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, and striking out eight.
- Joseph Hiller pitched the seventh inning, striking out two to close out the win for Quinnipiac.
ON DECK
- The Bobcats will play a pair of non-conference contests next week before returning to conference play. On Tuesday, the Bobcats will travel to take on the University of New Haven for a 3 PM start. The next day, QU will host CCSU with a 3 PM start time.
