Bobcats Fall to Red Foxes in Series Opener

Poughkeepsie, New York – The Bobcats returned to conference play and dropped the first game of the series to the Marist Red Foxes, 7-5, on Friday afternoon from the McCann Baseball Field in Poughkeepsie, New York.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Quinnipiac immediately got to work on the offensive end in the opening inning as they loaded the bases for James Marino. On a 3-2 count, Marino was hit by a pitch, forcing Jack Balcer to come home with the first run of the ballgame. Kyle Garbowski stepped in as the next batter and grounded out to second base, allowing Christian Smith to cross home to make it 2-0 Bobcats.
Marist had the answer in the bottom of the first inning. The Red Foxes got two runs to come in on two separate RBI singles to knot the game up at two after the first inning of play.
The Red Foxes took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a single from AJ Brotz.
This time, it was the Bobcats who had the immediate response in their half of the next inning. Quinnipiac loaded the bases once again, and Peyton Vancas drew a walk, which forced in Christian Smith to make it a one-run game. Chase Camac came in as a pinch-hitter and tied the game at four as he reached on a fielder's choice, and Alex Irizarry crossed home plate.
The game remained 4-4 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Red Foxes brought home three runs to take a 7-4 lead into the final three innings of play.
Quinnipiac came to bat in the ninth inning, still down three, looking to make a comeback. With a runner on base, Kyle Garbowski singled, allowing James Marino to come home to score to make it a two-run game. However, the Red Foxes were able to get the final out to seal the victory in game one of the series.

- Five different Bobcats recorded hits in the loss to the Red Foxes in the series opener.
- James Marino went 2-for-3 at the plate, raising his season average to .360. Marino recorded his 21st RBI of the season, which ranks second on the team.
- Marino hit his eighth double of the season in the effort, which is good for second on the squad.
- Caden Williamson extended his on-base streak to 20 as he went 2-for-5 at the plate. Williamson is now hitting .325 in his first collegiate season.
- Kyle Garbowski and Chase Camac both had one hit and one RBI in the loss.
