Bobcats Clinch Postseason Spot with Win
HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team takes its three-game win streak back to Hamden for its final regular season home game, taking on the Canisius Golden Griffins on Wednesday afternoon.
THE MATCHUP
Teams: Quinnipiac (8-6, 3-3 MAAC) vs. Canisius (5-9, 2-4 MAAC)
Broadcast: ESPN+
Live Stats: SidearmStats
LAST TIME OUT: vs. NIAGARA
The Bobcats nixed a four-goal deficit in the second quarter, going on a 10-3 midgame to pull ahead by three at the midway point of the fourth quarter but that was when the dramatics began.
Niagara rallied back, scoring the next three to tie the game before Abby Wise drove to the cage with 3:20 to go to score the game winner and Shannon Alden made a left-leg save with just over 60 seconds left to keep the hosts off the board for good, clinching the program's first road victory at Niagara.
PLAYOFF PUSH
It's very simple for the Bobcats when they take the field Wednesday. Win, and they clinch a spot in the MAAC postseason for the second time in the last three seasons. Quinnipiac advanced to its first-ever MAAC Semifinal in 2023, falling to the eventual champion Fairfield after defeating Canisius in the quarterfinal round at home.
This year's revamped format would feature a neutral site contest at the No. 3 or 4 seed on Friday, April 25 with the winner moving on to play the host on Sunday.
DRAW QUEEN
Junior Sophia Coan became the program's new single-season draw control recordholder snatching her 62nd of the year on the opening draw of the game, passing Sophia Iaccino's mark from 2021 for the top spot on the season leaderboard.
Her 4.79 draw controls per game are good for third in the league.
CLIMBING THE LEADERBOARD
EllaGrace Delmond and Abby Wise are cementing their names as some of the top offensive names in program history when their collegiate careers end in the next couple of weeks. Delmond joined the 100-goal club at Fairfield, becoming just the 11th Bobcat to hit the mark and is sixth all-time in career goals with 115. She is the only Bobcat who will graduate this decade to reach that mark and is one of three Bobcats in the last 10 years with 115 career goals.
Wise climbed to sixth all-time in career assists, currently at 57 career helpers over four years. That has her chasing Kyra Ochwat '15, who recorded 58 over her time. Her 25 assists this season are also the most by any Bobcat since 2013.
NATIONAL ACCOLADES
Inside Lacrosse recognized first-year netminder Shannon Alden as one of the Top 10 most impactful first-year students in NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse, the organization announced in mid-March. She enters the weekend ranked No. 15 nationally in saves per game (10.00), No. 11 in total saves (140) and No. 11 in save percentage (.498). She leads the MAAC in saves per game with a 10.00 average. She recorded a 20-save performance against UMass Lowell, just the second by a Bobcat goalkeeper since 2003 (Kyle Larkin, 2017) and the tenth overall in program history. She is also one of six players nationally to record that mark.
PREVIEWING THE MATCHUP:
Quinnipiac has won four of the last six meetings overall, including each of the last three in Hamden, Conn., however Canisius flew out to a six-goal advantage in last year's edition of the game but the Bobcat comeback attempt ran out of time in a 10-8 win in Buffalo.
EllaGrace Delmond recorded a pair of goals with two draw controls, while Abby Wise added a goal herself.
