Bobcats Topped By Fordham in Four Sets

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Yagmur Gunes and Damla Gunes recorded double-doubles for the second consecutive contest, but it wasn't enough as Fordham topped Quinnipiac, 3-1, in the Columbia Invitational on Schiller Court inside of Lebien Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Yagmur Gunes led the Bobcats with 15 kills and added 13 digs and three service aces, while Damla Gunes recorded 41 assists and 11 digs in the contest.
With the loss, Quinnipiac fell to 1-4 in the early campaign, while Fordham improved to 5-0 to begin its season.

FORDHAM 3, QUINNIPIAC 1
SET ONE (25-18, Quinnipiac)
The two sides exchanged blows to a 15-15 tie before back-to-back kills from Leilani-kai Giusta and a third kill from Yagmur Gunes put the Bobcats ahead 18-15, forcing a Fordham timeout. Out of the timeout, Fordham cut the deficit to 20-17 before Quinnipiac went on a 5-1 run led by two service aces from Yagmur Gunes to secure the 25-18 set victory.
SET TWO (13-25)
Fordham got off to a hot start in the second set, opening the frame with a 6-2 run to force a QU timeout. Out of the break, the Rams went on a 5-3 run before a kill from Giusta halted it with the Bobcats trailing 11-6.
The Rams led by as much as 14-7 before back-to-back kills from Alexandra Tennon and Lexi Morse cut the deficit to 14-9. However, Fordham pushed its lead to 18-10 before eventually taking the set, 25-13.
SET THREE (16-25)
The two sides traded points to a 6-6 tie before Fordham pushed ahead 19-10 before eventually holding on for the 25-16 set victory.
SET FOUR (20-25)
Fordham stayed hot, opening the fourth set with a 14-5 run before Quinnipiac clawed its way back to trim the deficit to 17-12. Trailing 20-14, QU went on a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to 23-20, but it wasn't enough as Fordham took the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.

The Bobcats will be back in action later tonight when they close play at the Columbia Invitational with a match against hosts Columbia (7 p.m.)
