HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program and head coach Rand Pecknold selected Jayden Lee as the captain for the upcoming 2023-24 campaign for the Bobcats.
Lee will serve as the Bobcats' 50th captain, succeeding fellow defenseman Zach Metsa, who donned the 'C' during the 2022-23 national championship season. He will be joined in Quinnipiac's leadership group by assistant captains Iivari Räsänen, Collin Graf and Jacob Quillan as the preseason gets underway this week in Hamden.
Jayden Lee - Captain
Lee is a leader both on and off the ice, serving in many campus organizations as well as anchoring the Bobcats' back line for all 41 contests during the 2022-23 campaign. He is coming off a career year in which he dished 16 assists and totaled 20 points on the offensive end, both career bests. He recorded points in three of four NCAA Tournament contests and blocked a team-high 54 shots, 14 more than any Bobcat player that season.
Over his career, Lee has recorded 133 total games, including 83 in his last two campaigns and earned the program's Michael Torrello Award, given to the player who most displays perseverance and resiliency throughout the season.
Collin Graf - Assistant Captain
Graf is coming off a career season in his first one as a Bobcat, earning CCM/AHCA First Team All-American Status, as well as a Hobey Baker Top 10 selection en route to a 59-point campaign, which ties the program's Division I record. He totaled 21 goals and 38 assists, most-memorably tying the National Championship game with 2:47 left, sending the game to overtime.
The Lincoln, Mass., native was tied for the NCAA lead in total assists and third nationally in total points while recording a point in 32 of 41 appearances. He also dished four assists against Union on Dec. 10, tying the national lead for most in a single contest by any Bobcat.
Iivari Räsänen - Assistant Captain
Räsänen was an anchor in the Bobcats' defensive core on both ends of the ice, blocking 40 shots in 41 appearances, good for second on the team leaderboard behind Lee. He also finished the title-winning campaign with career highs in goals, assists and points to aid Quinnipiac's offensive attack. He also ended the regular season strong, dishing six assists in a six-game span from Feb. 4 to Feb. 24.
The Tampere, Finland native has been a regular in the Bobcat lineup, posting 106 appearances over his three years in Hamden.
Jacob Quillan - Assistant Captain
Known for scoring the goal that clinched Quinnipiac's first national title in program history, the junior forward used that goal to put the finishing touches on a career year offensively. Playing in all 41 games, the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native totaled 38 points with 19 goals and 19 assists, including six, game-winners. The Frozen Four's Most Outstanding Player recorded points in all four NCAA Tournament contests, including the first two goals of the National Semifinal as well as the title-clincher.
Quillan finished with points in nine of his last 10 games and his six, game-winning goals were the most on the squad and third-most in the nation.
Quinnipiac raises its national championship banner and will open the 2023-24 campaign on Saturday, Oct., 7 against Boston College. For an inside look at the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program, be sure to follow it on social media @QU_MIH or go to gobobcats.com/mih.
