Bobcats Sweep UMES in Friday Doubleheader

SALISBURY, Md. – The Quinnipiac baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season, sweeping a doubleheader against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 5-1 and 8-6, Friday afternoon.
The Bobcats improved to 2-3 with the wins, while UMES fell to 0-6 with the losses. Jimmy Hagan and Sam Favieri earned wins for the Bobcats on Friday, while Anthony Donofrio led the offense with two homers and five RBIs.
GAME ONE: QU 5, UMES 1
The two sides remained scoreless until UMES struck first for a run in the fourth to go ahead 1-0, however, the Bobcats responded with two runs of their own the following inning. After Sebastian Mueller was hit by a pitch, McGwire Tuffy followed with an RBI triple to knot the contest at 1-1. Later in the inning, Braydon Seaburg plated Tuffy on a sacrifice bunt to push Quinnipiac ahead 2-1.
The Bobcats extended the lead to 4-1 in the sixth after Anthony Donofrio blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence for his first homer of the year. The Bobcats were able to add an insurance run in the ninth before clinching the four-run victory.
Jimmy Hagan got the start and earned the win, as he allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out seven in six innings of work. Andrew Rubayo earned the save after tossing three scoreless innings in relief to close.
GAME TWO: QU 8, UMES 6
Donofrio stayed hot in game two, putting Quinnipiac ahead 2-0 with a two-run homer to right in the third inning. However, UMES responded with five runs of their own in the third to take a 5-2 lead over QU.
After the Bobcats tied the contest at 5-5 in the fifth, the Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead at 6-5. With the game tied at 6-6 in the seventh, Jared Zimbardo led off the inning with a double and was plated off an RBI single from Sebastian Mueller to put QU ahead 7-6. Zimbardo gave the Bobcats some extra insurance with a solo homer in the ninth, securing Quinnipiac's 8-6 win.
