Bobcats Complete Weekend Sweep Over UMES

SALISBURY, Md. – The Quinnipiac baseball team completed the four-game sweep over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, downing the Hawks 3-0 and 14-3 in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
With the wins, the Bobcats improved to 4-3 on the early campaign, while the Hawks fell to 0-8 on the season. First-year outfielder John Heitzman led the offense with four hits, six RBIs and two walks in two games.
GAME ONE: QU 3, UMES 0
The two sides played to a scoreless tie after the first seven innings of play before the Bobcats struck first for a run in the eighth. With McGwire Tuffy leading off third, John Heitzman lined a single to the outfield to plate Tuffy, pushing Quinnipiac ahead 1-0.
The Bobcats kept their foot on the gas, adding insurance in the ninth as Jared Zimbardo and Sebastian Mueller tallied an RBI apiece in the frame to extend the lead to 3-0.
Mike Poncini pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the save, securing the 3-0 win for Quinnipiac.
GAME TWO: QU 14, UMES 3
The Bobcats got off to a quick start offensively in game two with Keegan O'Connor roping a two-run double to the wall in the opening frame to put Quinnipiac ahead 2-0. Later in the inning, Heitzman followed with a two-run double of his own to extend the lead to 4-0.
With the Bobcats leading 7-0 in the second, Heitzman came through with a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-0. Later in the inning, Christian Smith recorded a two-run single of his own to push the lead to 11-0.
The deficit proved to be too much for the Hawks, as the Bobcats held on for the eventual 14-3 victory, completing the four-game sweep.

- The Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, March 3 when QU opens a three-game series at Elon
