BURLINGTON, VT – Quinnipiac men's soccer readies for its second game of the new season on Tuesday night, traveling north to square off with Vermont in non-league action.
THE MATCHUP: at VERMONT
- UVM won its opener at Merrimack on Thursday, Aug. 25.
- Ryan Combe registered the first goal of the season for the Catamounts, who won their second season opener in a row.
- Quinnipiac is 1-2-1 against UVM since 2005. Vermont won the latest matchup in 2019, defeating QU 1-0 in Hamden.
- Noah Silverman and Jason Budhai each scored for the Bobcats, as QU dropped its 2022 season opener at Boston College on Aug. 25.
- Silverman's goal – the first of his career – came less than 20 seconds into the new season.
- Budhai scored in the second half of action, his third goal in the last two seasons.
- The Bobcats were selected No. 4 in the 2022 Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the MAAC office on Thursday, Aug. 18.
- QU earned 78 points in the poll, finishing just behind Marist, Rider and Fairfield for the top spot.
- Senior forward Brage Aasen – Quinnipiac's leading goal scorer from a season ago – was named to the Preseason All-MAAC team for Quinnipiac. Aasen recorded a team-best 11 goals to go along with three assists last year. The All-MAAC selection from a season ago has tallied 17 goals and 13 assists over his first 43 collegiate games.
HEAD COACH ERIC DA COSTA
- Former Quinnipiac standout Eric Da Costa will enter his 18th season at the helm of the Bobcats men's soccer program in the fall of 2022. He is the longest tenured men's soccer coach in Quinnipiac's NCAA history.
- A product of Quinnipiac's strong soccer tradition, Da Costa's formula for success and his reputation for assembling winning teams are evident after 16 seasons at his alma mater. Da Costa has a 132-119-52 record during his time at Quinnipiac, and has led the Bobcats to a postseason conference tournament appearance in nine of the last 10 seasons (2012 in the NEC, 2013-spring 2021 in the MAAC).
- Since joining the MAAC prior to the 2013 season, Quinnipiac has appeared in four MAAC Tournament title contests (2013, 2016, 2018, spring 2021). Under Da Costa's tutelage, the Bobcats have posted an impressive 53-22-11 mark in regular season MAAC games.
- Quinnipiac's fall 2022 schedule features 18 regular season contests in total.
- The Bobcats will host nine home games at the QU Soccer Stadium in Hamden.
- QU begins MAAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when the Bobcats travel to Loudonville, N.Y. for a date with Siena. The Bobcats then return home to the QU Soccer Field for their MAAC home opener against in-state rival Fairfield on Oct. 1.
- The Bobcats won nine games in the fall 2021 campaign, going 6-3 at the QU Soccer Stadium in Hamden. QU won five consecutive games to begin the season, defeating Boston College (first time since 2007), UMass Lowell, Sacred Heart, CCSU and Harvard.
- The Bobcats received votes twice in the fall of 2021 for the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll – which recognizes the top Division I programs in the nation. Da Costa and the Bobcats claimed three All-MAAC awards at the end of the regular season: Brage Aasen: All-MAAC First Team, Paulo Soares: All-MAAC Second Team, Sam McCann: MAAC All-Rookie Team.
- Quinnipiac finished 9-8 in total (4-6 MAAC).
