HOW IT HAPPENED
Quinnipiac struck first in the top of the first to get out to an early advantage. With one out in the inning, Anthony Donofrio and Danny Melnick knocked back-to-back singles to put runners on for Ian Ostberg. The Bobcats went for a double-steal attempt and an error in the field allowed Donofrio to score to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. However, the Rams responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first and in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
Quinnipiac retook the lead in the fourth after Gianni Arici blasted a three-run homer to left to push Quinnipiac ahead 4-2. However URI responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame and two in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead over Quinnipiac.
After back-to-back singles from Ostberg and Keegan O'Connor the Bobcats had runners on first and second with no outs in the sixth. Ostberg came around to score after back-to-back wild pitches to knot the game at 5-5. Later in the inning with runners on the corners, Kyle Maves reached on a fielder's choice, allowing O'Connor to score to give Quinnipiac a 6-5 lead. Quinnipiac added two more runs in the inning due to a passed ball and error in the field, giving the Bobcats an 8-5 lead. The Bobcats capped the inning with a two-run shot, courtesy of Matt DeRosa, extending the lead to 10-5.
The Rams would not quit, rallying to score a total of six runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take an 11-10 lead. URI added to its lead with two runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 13-10. The Bobcats battled in the ninth as Michael Kohn planted a two-run homer over the fence to cut the deficit to 13-12, but it wasn't enough as QU couldn't get over the hump and fell in the one-run loss.
