HAMDEN, Conn. - Former Quinnipiac women's basketball standout Queenie Edwards ('95) and former head coach Ron Hanson were inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2022, in a ceremony held on Wednesday evening at the Cascade Fine Catering in Hamden, Connecticut.
A member of the Quinnipiac Athletics Hall of Fame (2010) and the MAAC Basketball Honor Roll (2016), Edwards truly left her mark on the program in her four years in Hamden. Leading the then-Quinnipiac Braves throughout the early 1990s, Queen Edwards finished a stellar four-year career as a standout guard. Standing at just five-foot-five, Edwards finished her career with over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists and 300 steals. She wrapped up her time in Hamden with 1,207 points, graduating in 1995 as the 10th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
A two-time Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year (1992-93, 1993-94), Edwards made a name for herself as an elite defender, ranking second on Quinnipiac's all-time career steals list with 394. Edwards broke out with a career-year in 1992-93 as she was named to the NE-10 Second Team after averaging 16.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 4.4 steals in 35.8 minutes while starting all 27 games for Quinnipiac. She currently ranks 20th all-time at Quinnipiac in scoring (1,207), third in assists (476) and second in steals (394). A distinguished local standout hailing from New Haven, Edwards starred for Hillhouse High School as she was named First Team All-State in Connecticut twice, averaging 15 points, 10 assists and six rebounds per game across her career.
Ron Hanson's lasting impact on girls' and women's basketball in Connecticut came during its formative years. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Association held its inaugural girls' state tournament in 1974. Ron began coaching the girls' basketball team at Ellington High School in 1975. During the 1979-1983 seasons, his teams captured the North Central Connecticut Conference four years in a row and won the State Championship three out of those four years.
Ron brought his talents to then-Quinnipiac College in the fall of 1983. He coached the Braves to 25-plus victories in each of his two seasons as head coach at the then-Division II program. His teams captured the New England Collegiate Conference regular season and conference championships and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II tournament both years. His 1983-84 team, which had a 28-3 record in his inaugural season, is enshrined in the Quinnipiac Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ron was named 1983-84 NECC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year, 1984 New Haven Tap Off Club Connecticut Female College Coach of the Year and 1984-85 Women's Basketball Coaches' Association District Coach of the Year.
