Haywood Leads Bobcats' Fourth Quarter Charge in Win Over St. Francis Brooklyn

HAMDEN, Conn. – In what proved to be a defensive battle, the Quinnipiac women's basketball team (4-3) was able to remain undefeated at home, downing Saint Francis Brooklyn (1-8), 49-45, Sunday afternoon inside of M&T Bank Arena.
The Bobcats saw three players reach double-figures in scoring, led by Cur'Tiera Haywood's 12 points on the afternoon. Rose Caverly and Jackie Grisdale contributed 10 points apiece.
Haywood, Mikala Morris and Mary Baskerville anchored the defense, combining for 13 rebounds, eight blocks and five steals between the trio.
It was a slow start for the Bobcats offensively, as the Terriers held Quinnipiac to 2-for-15 (13.3%) from the floor in the first quarter, with St. Francis Brooklyn taking a 12-7 lead into the second quarter.
The Terriers opened the second quarter with a swift 5-1 run to push ahead 17-8 before Jackie Grisdale halted the run with a three-pointer with 7:13 remaining in the first half. However, St. Francis Brooklyn responded with a 7-1 run to push its lead to 12 at 24-12, its largest lead of the first half.
Quinnipiac was able to hold St. Francis Brooklyn to just two points over the final 3:44 of the half, cutting the deficit to 26-18 entering the break.
After falling behind 34-23 in the third quarter, the Bobcats used the final 5:45 of the frame to go on a 14-4 run, cutting the deficit to 38-37 entering the fourth.
Quinnipiac held St. Francis to 1-for-11 (9%) shooting during the run, capped by Mary Baskerville's huge score and block to close the quarter.
Quinnipiac maintained its momentum into the fourth, going on a 10-0 run over the opening 8:50 of the fourth to take a 47-38 lead.
The Bobcats ended up holding the Terriers to just seven points on 3-for-11 (27.3%) shooting in the fourth quarter, as they held on for the 49-45 victory.
