Bobcats Best Niagara in Hamden to Advance to MAAC Title Match

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer cruised past Niagara in the MAAC Semifinals, 5-2, on Thursday, Nov. 10 at the QU Soccer Stadium.
With the victory, the top-seeded Bobcats will turn their attention to the 2022 MAAC title match on Sunday, Nov. 13 in Hamden. QU has reached the MAAC championship game five times (2013, 2016, 2018, 2020-21, 2022) under Head Coach Eric Da Costa since the Bobcats joined the league.
Seniors Tomas Svecula and David Bercedo each scored a pair of goals to lead the way for Quinnipiac. Luke Allen chipped in with a goal of his own, and Brage Aasen recorded three assists in the win.
QU improves to 12-4-3 on the season. The Bobcats will face Iona (defeated Manhattan 1-0 in MAAC Semifinals) in the MAAC title contest on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 12:00 PM in Hamden.

SCORING SUMMARY
First Half
- (1' – Quinnipiac 1, Niagara 0): Brage Aasen played the ball ahead up the left side to David Bercedo, and the captain finished into the lower-left portion of the net to make it 1-0 Bobcats less than a minute into action.
- (13' – Quinnipiac 1, Niagara 1): Rodrigo Almeida even things up at 1, scoring less than 15 minutes after QU took the lead.
- (21' – Quinnipiac 2, Niagara 1): Tomas Svecula found the back of the net for the Bobcats in the 21st minute of play. The Bobcats fired a series of shots on goal, then Svecula tracked down a rebound and blasted it home to give QU a lead.
- (38' – Quinnipiac 3, Niagara 1): Tomas Svecula netted his second of the day on a penalty kick try.
- (52' – Quinnipiac 4, Niagara 1): David Bercedo scored his second goal of the day in to open the second half scoring, with assists from Brage Aasen and Ramesh Delsouz. The Bobcats used great ball movement to find Bercedo wide open in front of the Niagara goal.
- (56' – Quinnipiac 5, Niagara 1): Luke Allen scored QU's fifth and final goal of the afternoon, locating a ball that redirected off the post and heading it in to extend the lead.
- (75' – Quinnipiac 5, Niagara 2): Rodrigo Almeida netted a penalty kick goal to make it 5-2 late in the second half.
- David Bercedo – the winner of the MAAC Golden Boot award – scored twice to extend his league lead in goals. The senior captain is up to 13 total goals on the season.
- Fellow senior Tomas Svecula registered his second multi-goal game of the season, scoring twice in the first half. Svecula now has eight goals and four assists (20 total points) this year.
- Brage Aasen chipped in with three assists. Aasen has recorded a point in three of QU's last four matches – and is now up to 15 points over 10 games.
- Luke Allen's goal is his first of the 2022 season. Ramesh Delsouz and Sander Sonsterud also picked up an assist for the Bobcats.
- Quinnipiac outshot Niagara 26-14.
- The Bobcats are 8-3-2 vs. Niagara since 2000 (Division I Era). QU is 4-2-1 vs. the Purple Eagles over the last seven meetings.
- QU keeper Karl Netzell made four saves in the victory.
- Quinnnipiac now turns its attention to the MAAC Tournament title match on Sunday in Hamden. The No. 1 Bobcats will play host to No. 2 Iona at 12:00 PM on Nov. 12 – broadcasted live on ESPN+.
