Bobcats Down Iona in Hamden to Win 2022 MAAC Title

Quinnipiac Captures First League Title Since 2013
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer defeated Iona, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in Hamden to capture the 2022 MAAC title.
David Bercedo, Noah Silverman and Tomas Svecula all scored a goal for the Bobcats, while Alexander Stjernegaard tallied three assists.
The Bobcats will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 with the victory.
David Bercedo, Tomas Svecula, Alexander Stjernegaard and Karl Netzell were all named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team for the Bobcats.

(8' – Quinnipiac 1, Iona 0): David Bercedo scored less than 10 minutes into action in Hamden. Alexander Stjernegaard played a beautiful corner chance into the center of the box, and Bercedo headed the ball into the back of the net to break the tie. - (56' – Quinnipiac 2, Iona 0): Noah Silverman scored to make it 2-0 Bobcats. David Bercedo won possession of the ball in the midfield, and Silverman capitalized by putting the finishing touches on his fourth score of the year.
- (65' – Quinnipiac 3, Iona 0): Tomas Svecula received a pass from Stjernegaard, turned a blasted a strike into the top-right corner of the net to give QU the three-goal edge.
- (80' – Quinnipiac 3, Iona 1): Aly Camara made it a two-goal game, scoring Iona's first goal of the contest in the 80th minute.
- (89' – Quinnipiac 3, Iona 2): Elird Mero found the back of the net for Iona to make it a one-goal game.
- David Bercedo – the winner of the MAAC Golden Boot award – scored his 14th goal of the season in the win. Bercedo had three goals and an assist over two MAAC Tournament wins.
- Noah Silverman's goal is his fourth of the year. The graduate student last scored on 10/26/22 – when he had a pair of goals against Mount St. Mary's.
- Tomas Svecula scored his ninth goal of the year in the win. Svecula netted three goals over the two postseason games in Hamden.
- Karl Netzell made eight saves in total, including multiple diving stops in the first half to help the Bobcats keep the lead.
- Alexander Stjernegaard tallied three assists. He becomes the second Bobcat to record three helpers in a contest this year (Brage Aasen on Nov. 10 in MAAC Semifinals).
- QU moves to 13-4-3 on the season. The Bobcats are 8-1-2 since Oct. 1.
- The Bobcats are now 2-1-1 vs. Iona over the last four meetings.
- Total shots were 20-14 in favor of Iona (11-6 SOG).
- Quinnipiac Men's Soccer has now reached two NCAA Tournaments under Head Coach Eric Da Costa since the Bobcats joined the MAAC in 2013. The Bobcats have won five regular season MAAC titles during that span, as well, and have reached the league title match five different times.
- Quinnipiac now awaits its opponent in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship bracket will be announced on Monday afternoon.
