Correira Pitches Second Straight Complete Game in 5-1 Game One Win

Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Marist on Senior Day with 5-1 Win and 12-4 Loss
HAMDEN, Conn. – Arthur Correira (Rehoboth, Massachusetts) pitched his second straight complete game in game one of Friday's doubleheader as the Quinnipiac baseball team split the doubleheader with a 5-1 win before falling in the second game, 12-4.
Correira struck out six batters in his second complete game of the week, leading the Bobcats to the game one victory.
Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) went 2 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs in game one of the doubleheader before walking twice and scoring a run in the second game. With two walks in game two, he set the new Division I program record for career walks with 90.
Sam LaChance (Dover, New Hampshire) also launched a solo home run in the first game of the doubleheader while Sebastian Mueller (Pottersville, New Jersey) blasted a two-run home run in the second game.
The Bobcats took the lead in game one on Marrero's solo home run and never looked back. LaChance doubled the lead in the fourth inning of that game before Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) had an RBI single and Marrero had a two-RBI double to make it a 5-1 game in the fifth inning.
David Longstreeth (Hatfield, Massachusetts) pitched a scoreless inning as the opener of game two before giving way to Blake DeCarr (Foxboro, Massachusetts) for the next three innings.
Both teams were scoreless through the third before Marist struck for two in the fourth.
Quinnipiac held it close but Marist score six times in the seventh and three times in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
The Bobcats managed a pair of runs in the eighth inning on a pair of sacrifice flies and the two-run home run from Mueller in the bottom of the ninth inning but the Bobcats ultimately could not come back from the early deficit.

- Marrero launched the sixth pitch of the at bat deep over the centerfield fence to take a 1-0 lead.
FOURTH INNING
- With two outs in the inning, LaChance blasted the fourth pitch he saw well over the left field fence to double the Bobcats lead.
FIFTH INNING
- After Marist got a run back in the top half, Derek Kasperzyk (Killingworth, Connecticut) led off with a bunt single and later moved up to second on a failed pickoff attempt.
- Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) blooped a single through the right side to put runners on the corners for Bender, who drilled a single to left to score Kasperzyk and advance Vulgamore to third.
- Marrero continued his impressive day as he cleared the bases with a double off the center field fence to score both Vulgamore and Bender from first to take a 5-1 lead.

- Gianni Arici (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) led off with a four-pitch walk and advanced to second as Kasperzyk followed with a walk of his own.
- Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before coming home to score on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) and Vulgamore.
NINTH INNING
- Marrero drew a seven-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning before Mueller tattooed the second pitch here saw over the left field fence.

NOTES
- Marrero was 2 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs in game one before drawing two walks and scoring another run in the second game.
- He now has 90 career walks, setting the Division I program record for career walks and passing the previous record of 88 held by former teammate Liam Scafariello '19.
- Marrero has 22 walks this season and 26 hits, leading to a .466 on base percentage.
- He is tied for third in the MAAC with six home runs and 22 walks while his .636 slugging percentage is sixth and he is 10th with a .466 on base percentage.
- Marrero is riding a seven-game on base streak and has reached safely in 21 of the 26 games this season
- LaChance torched his first home run of the season and second of his career in the game one win
- Mueller went deep for the second time this season and first since April 7 at Fairfield.
- He has hit safely in four of the last five games.
- Correira tossed a complete-game for the second straight outing as he struck out six batters in seven innings of work Friday.
- He improved to 2-0 on the season with a 3.27 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 22 innings of work.
- Bender went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles, a run and an RBI in game one
- He now has 23 hits this season with 15 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

- Connor Mahoney (North Salem, New York) made his first appearance of the season in over a month as he struck out three batters in an inning of work in game two, tying his career-high for strikeouts in an appearance.
- Quinnipiac concludes the 2021 regular season Saturday with a doubleheader against the Marist Red Foxes beginning at 12 p.m. at McCann Baseball Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
