HAMDEN, Conn. - Senior Grace Markey has been named the 2021 Sarah Devens Award recipient, as announced by ECAC Hockey and Hockey East on Thursday, April 15. The Sarah Devens Award is annually presented by ECAC Hockey and the Hockey East Association to one player who exemplifies a commitment to leadership on and off the ice.
The Sarah Devens Award is presented in a joint honor by ECAC Hockey and Hockey East every year after the hockey season ends, and the recipient is awarded a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship. The award was created to honor the former Dartmouth women's hockey player, Sarah Devens, who died in 1995.
Markey is the third Quinnipiac women's ice hockey player to receive this prestigious honor; Kenzie Lancaster '19 and Chelsea Laden '15 each won their senior years. Markey has truly exemplified what it means to be a leader on and off the ice and represents Quinnipiac Athletics and the women's ice hockey program in the most extraordinary ways.
She has been the team's community service leader for the past two years, taking on numerous projects around the Quinnipiac and Hamden communities, and she was nominated for this year's Hockey Humanitarian award. Markey served as the president of the Q-Coor organization, which leads the community service efforts on campus. This season, she helped organize and fundraise over $2,000 for the women's ice hockey team's annual "Do It For Daron" mental health awareness game. In addition, the assistant captain created a program for Quinnipiac professors to have their children participate in workout activities on zooms with Quinnipiac student-athletes.
She is a three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic selection, three-time AHCA Academic All-American, a top-three finalist for the Mandi Schwartz award and member of the Biological Honor society. Markey has also been accepted into medical school and will be attending Wayne State University after graduation.
