Baseball Splits Weekend Series with Siena After Second Straight Doubleheader Split
Quinnipiac fell in game one against Siena, 8-6, after scoring six runs in the fifth inning to claw its way back from an 8-0 deficit.
Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) led the Bobcats offensively once again with four hits in the doubleheader with the Saints, including a dominant game two with a two-run home run in the first inning. Marrero went 3 for 4 in game two with his home run, a double, three runs and three RBIs.
After Siena scored four runs in the top of the second inning, Derek Goldrick (Weare, New Hampshire) settled in to pitch five full innings before giving way to Colin Donnelly (Flemington, New Jersey).
Quinnipiac broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning as Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) grounded his first of two RBI singles through the left side of the infield to pull the Bobcats within a run before Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) sent a missile over the centerfield wall for a three-run blast to take a 6-4 lead over the Saints.
Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) had an RBI single in the seventh inning to continue the scoring before Marrero had an RBI double to score Maves and Vulgamore had an RBI single to score Marrero and make it 9-4 game.
Donnelly allowed just one earned run in his four innings of work to earn the win for the Bobcats in game two and struck out four batters. He also pitched two innings of relief in game one as the Bobcats nearly came back to win that game.
Siena scored eight times in the first inning of game one, with all the runs going down as unearned. Jimmy Hagan (Westfield, Massachusetts) settled down and pitched near perfect over the next four innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bobcats broke open for six runs as Marrero had an RBI double before Vulgamore pulled a two-run double to left center to cut the lead to 8-3. Sebastian Mueller (Pottersville, New Jersey) singled through the left side to score Vulgamore but an errant throw allowed Bender to come around to score from first and Mueller moved up to second.
Michael Kohn (Rockville, Maryland) followed one batter later to pull within two runs of the Saints but the Bobcats could not complete the comeback.

FIFTH INNING
- Sam LaChance (Dover, New Hampshire) led off the inning with a single and with two outs in the inning, came all the way around from first to score on Marrero's double off the right field fence.
- Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) singled to the shortstop to put runners on the corners for Vulgamore, who doubled to left center to score both Ostberg and Marrero and cut Siena's lead to 8-3.
- Bender walked on four straight pitches to put runners on first and second, then Mueller singled through the left side to score Vulgamore from second. The third basemen cut off the throw and tried to get Bender at second, but the throw went into the outfield allowing Bender to score and Mueller to move up to second.
- Kohn followed Mueller with a single up the middle that scored Mueller to make it an 8-6 game but the Bobcats could not finish off the comeback.

FIRST INNING
- Maves grounded a 3-2 single through the left side to lead off the bottom of the first and then stole second before Marrero crushed a home run on a full count to take a 2-0 lead.
- Siena had held a 4-2 lead since the top of the second inning but Quinnipiac took the lead for good in the bottom half of the sixth.
- Marrero singled through the left side and stole second before moving up to third on Ostberg's single through the right side.
- With runners on the corners, Vulgamore pulled a single through the left side to cut the Siena lead to 4-3.
- In the next at bat, Bender launched a three-run home run over the centerfield wall to take the lead for good, 6-4.
- McGwire Tuffy (Robbinsville, New Jersey) pulled a single to right field and stole second before coming home to score on Maves' single to right center.
- Marrero followed Maves with a double to right center that scored Maves and take an 8-4 lead.
- Two batters later, Vulgamore pulled another single through the left side to score Marrero and take a 9-4 lead.
- Marrero had another four hits, as well as four RBIs and four runs scored, in Saturday's doubleheader, including a 3 for 4 showing in game two with a double, home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.
- Marrero is tied for second in the MAAC with five home runs and second with 17 RBIs, third with 21 hits, fourth with 16 runs and tied sixth with four doubles.
- He finished the weekend with eight hits in three games, and now has an RBI in five straight games.
- Vulgamore had four RBIs in the doubleheader, including a two-run double in game one and two RBI singles in game two.
- He is third in the MAAC With 16 RBIs and tied for the MAAC lead with five doubles
- Vulgamore's four RBIs give him 132 in his career, tying the Division I program record held by Vincent Guglietti '15.
- He is also tied for fifth overall in program history.
- Bender picked up two hits in game two for his fourth two-hit game in the last five games
- His three-run home run was his third of the season and seventh of his career, setting a career-high for home runs in a single season in just 18 games.
- Tuffy recorded the first two-hit game of his career, and first double, as he went 2 for 4 with a double in game two.
- Tuffy also had his first two career stolen bases and came around to score a run.
- Maves also had a pair of hits for his third two-hit game this season
- He also scored two runs in a game for the first time this season, and picked up his fourth stolen base.
- Mueller picked up another hit to give him a hit in five of the last seven games, and his run scored was his seventh of the season
- Donnelly pitched in both ends of the doubleheader, totaling six innings with just one run on two hits allowed and five strikeouts.
- He had four innings pitched in game two with four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season
- Donnelly pitched in three of the four games this weekend.
- Quinnipiac heads back down to Fairfield on Wednesday to wrap up the four-game series between the two teams with a doubleheader at Alumni Baseball Diamond.
- The Bobcats are back home next weekend when Canisius will come to Hamden for a pair of doubleheaders beginning Saturday at 12 p.m.
