Baseball Falls in Doubleheader at Fairfield

Bobcats Battle Stags in Contested Matchups, Lose Leads Late
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team held late leads in each game of Wednesday's doubleheader but ultimately came up short at Fairfield, 2-1 and 5-2, in the Bobcats final set of midweek games.
Starting pitchers Tate Copeland (Middletown, Rhode Island) and Blake DeCarr (Foxboro, Massachusetts) were stellar in their starts Wednesday but ultimately took no decisions. Copeland started game one, striking out three in 4.1 scoreless innings while DeCarr allowed just one run on six hits in six innings with five strikeouts.
Quinnipiac scored the first run in game one as Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Matthew DeRosa (North Haven, Connecticut) and take a 1-0 lead. Fairfield ultimately scored two times in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 2-1 one.
Fairfield took a 1-0 lead on a home run in the fourth inning of game two but the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Sebastian Mueller (Pottersville, New Jersey) brought home Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) on an RBI groundout before McGwire Tuffy (Robbinsville, New Jersey) drilled a double to left centerfield that easily scored Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire).
Marrero's RBI was his 18th of the season while Sam LaChance (Dover, New Hampshire) had a team-high three hits in the doubleheader.

THIRD INNING
- Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as DeRosa reached on a throwing error to start the inning before advancing to third on an error by the Fairfield shortstop as Jared Zimbardo (Middlesex, New Jersey) reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners.
- Marrero followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right field that easily scored DeRosa for the game's first run but that's all the Bobcats could manage.

SIXTH INNING
- Bender reached on infield single to start the inning and moved up to second on Vulgamore's single through the right side
- After a wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position, Bender came home to score and tie the game on Sebastian Mueller's (Pottersville, New Jersey) groundout to second.
- With Vulgamore standing on third and two outs in the inning, Tuffy drilled a double to left center field and score Vulgamore to take a 2-1 lead.
NOTES
- Marrero recorded his 18th RBI with a sacrifice fly in game one before recording a single, walk and had a stolen base in game two.
- He ranks second in the MAAC in RBIs and is fourth with 22 hits.
- LaChance led the Bobcats with three hits in the doubleheader, going 2 for 3 in game one and 1 for 4 in game two.
- He now has 10 hits this season
- Mueller recorded his sixth RBI with his RBI groundout in game two.
- Tuffy recorded his second career double and second career RBI with his RBI double in game two.
- DeRosa made the first two starts of his career Wednesday and scored his first run. He also drew his first walk.
- Copeland made the second start of his career and did not allow a run for the first time in his career
- He struck out three batters and had lasted a season-long 4.1 innings,
- DeCarr made his third start and sixth appearance, pitching a season-best six innings and had five strikeouts, his second-most in an appearance this season.
- Quinnipiac returns home this weekend when Canisius will come to Hamden for a pair of doubleheaders beginning Saturday at 12 p.m.
- The Bobcats are home for two of the next three weekends hosting Canisius (April 17-18) and Manhattan (May 1-2) with a bye weekend in between.
