Garcia Deals in Game One, Bobcats Split Doubleheader with Monmouth

Baseball Opens Season with Win for First Time Since 2017 with Combined Shutout
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team opened the 2021 season in style with a 5-0 shutout of Monmouth but the Hawks rallied to win game two, 8-5, in MAAC play Saturday afternoon.
Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) hit a three-run home run and added two doubles to go 3 for 6 in both games while Sam LaChance (Dover, New Hampshire) was 3 for 6 with three RBIs and Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) led the Bobcats with four hits in the opening split.
Brandyn Garcia (Granby, Connecticut) was dealing in game one as he struck out eight batters and scattered two hits in six innings of shutout baseball before Derek Goldrick (Weare, New Hampshire) struck out the side in the seventh to finish the combined shutout.
Quinnipiac opened the season with a victory for the first time since the 2017 season when the Bobcats defeated UTSA in San Antonio, 5-4.

- Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) singled up the middle and advanced to second on another single up the middle from LaChance
- Vulgamore launched a three-run home run to put the Bobcats on top, 3-0, with their first runs of the season

- Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on an Ostberg double to right field
- Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) drilled a single up the middle to score both Maves and Ostberg from scoring position

FIRST INNING
- Ostberg led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.
- After a Marrero walk, Bender grounded out to the pitcher to advance both runners into scoring position.
- LaChance lifted a fly ball to center to score Ostberg on a sacrifice fly but Marrero was tagged out at second to end the inning.
- Quinnipiac responded to a three-run third inning from Monmouth with two in the fourth
- LaChance singled through the right side with one out in the inning and advanced to third on a double from Vulgamore.
- First year Jared Zimbardo (Middlesex, New Jersey) walked with two outs in the inning before fellow first year Sebastian Mueller (Pottersville, New Jersey) drove in Vulgamore and LaChance with a single to left but was out at second trying to stretch it to a double.
- The Bobcats took the lead in the fifth inning as Maves led off with a single and moved up to second on an Ostberg hit by pitch.
- After Marrero flew out to center to move both runners into scoring position, LaChance singled to drive in both runners for another pair of RBIs

NOTES
- Vulgamore blasted a three-run home run for his first round tripper of the season and 24th of his Quinnipiac career.
- Vulgamore's 24 career home runs are tied with Al Marano '04 for fourth in Division I program history, and tied for eighth with Marano and Toby Peterson '00 all-time.
- He moved into a tie with Randy Gress '07 for third in Division I program history with his 119th career RBI after his three-run blast, while his 119 RBIs are tied for eighth all-time in program history
- Ostberg had four hits in the doubleheader, including a 3 for 4 showing in the second game of the doubleheader.
- LaChance had three hits in the doubleheader, with a 2 for 3 game and three RBIs in game two of the doubleheader for his second career three-RBI game
- Mueller recorded two RBIs as he made his first career collegiate starts Saturday
- Garcia was masterful in the best start of his young collegiate career, tossing a career-high six shutout innings with eight strikeouts.
- Goldrick struck out the side coming out of the bullpen for the Bobcats in game one, completing the combined shutout with Garcia.
- Kevin Seitter (Ridgewood, New Jersey) was dealing out of the bullpen in game two of the doubleheader has he tossed career-highs with three innings of work and five strikeouts.
- Quinnipiac and Monmouth meet again in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m., with all the action streamed live on GoBobcats.com.
