Season Begins with Four-Game Series Against Monmouth on March 20-21
HAMDEN, Conn. - It has been just over one year since the Quinnipiac Baseball team last took the field representing the Bobcat logo. With the Bobcats heading into the season still as the defending MAAC champions, head coach John Delaney spoke about the energy surrounding the team going into this season.
"This time of year, versus previous years, there's always the excitement at the beginning and then it kind of fizzles until you get to the season and the excitement starts. The excitement and energy has been off the charts I think since day one of this preseason".
Quinnipiac last took the field on March 11, 2020, a 7-5 victory at Kennesaw State.
After the long layoff, the Bobcats will be heading straight into conference play on Saturday when they open the season with a four-game series against the Monmouth Hawks in Hamden, Conn. Delaney spoke about the challenges of beginning with conference play instead of a month of non-conference competition.
"It's going to add a little bit more of a challenge to us, as much as we have the extended preseason, because there's so much that we never got to cover in the fall that we have to cover now on our team, and learning how some of the younger guys can work with the older the older guys."
Quinnipiac's first years and sophomores are both still new to collegiate baseball, with the sophomores seeing just 14 collegiate games in their careers before the COVID-19 Pandemic set in.
"Some of these kids haven't they haven't worked together, other than when we started so this preseason it's going to be a lot of work on the small, detailed stuff of the team defense so we can play quality baseball on defensive side."
With a lot of returning players this season mixed in with a lot of young talented players, Delaney spoke about the excitement level of talent on this year's squad and how he plans on balancing it. He also credited his older players and how important they will be for the younger ones.
"I think this roster is filled with some of the best talent we've probably had from the top, to the bottom, the older guys know they're going to leave kind of the tradition here when they're out of here, so they want to set the program up for future success on top of that, you can see them trying to work with your guys to catch them up to speed."
Captains Blake DeCarr, David Longstreeth, Dylan Lutz and Ian Ostberg have provided invaluable leadership throughout this fall and spring for the Bobcats.
Add in the talent of graduate students Andre Marrero, Evan Vulgamore, Colin Donnelly and Colton Bender, among others, Quinnipiac returns a lot of talent for the 2021 season.
With the Bobcats still holding the title as the defending MAAC champions, Delaney spoke about what it's going to take to retain that title once again in 2021.
"It's really just going to come down to which team is going to want it more, and that's going to be the biggest part of this whole thing. There's going to be a lot of pieces that we have to figure out on the defensive side and how the lineup will be worked out."
Knowing what it's like to hoist the trophy at the end of the season, and knowing they didn't get a chance to repeat in 2020, the Quinnipiac baseball team is eager to take the field in 2021.
"The desire and termination from this group is at an all-time high right now to make a message right now that it's been two years but nothing's changed," Delaney said. "We want to win more than we did in 2019, you won't have to say much to get these guys fired up at this point, it's just they're just already fired up to play again."
First pitch of the 2021 season begins at Noon on March 20.
