Schuler joins women's hockey program as Volunteer Advisor to the Coaching Staff
HAMDEN, Conn. – Head coach Cassandra Turner and her staff are pleased to announce the addition of Laura Schuler to the women's ice hockey program as the Volunteer Advisor to the Coaching Staff.
"We're thrilled to have Laura joining the Bobcat Family!" Turner said. "Having played and coached with Laura, I've seen her incredible passion for the sport, her love to compete, and her relentless drive to win championships. With her experience and knowledge of the game, she will be a valuable asset to our staff and student-athletes this season. Welcome Schu!"
Schuler was most recently the head coach at Dartmouth College and has an extensive resume of coaching and playing experience with Hockey Canada.
"I am so excited to be joining the women's hockey program and Bobcat family," Schuler said. "I'm super excited for the opportunity to learn from Cass, her staff, the players and the alumnae, and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better and growing together as a team. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work and learn from so many great coaches, and I'm excited to bring that knowledge forward to this position. This is an outstanding program with a tremendous history of excellence and I can't wait to get started."
As a player, Schuler competed for Hockey Canada after her collegiate career at Northeastern. She won three gold medals at the World Championships in 1990, 1992 and 1997, two gold medals at the Pacific Rim Championships in 1995 and 1996 and two gold and a silver at the Three Nations Cup in 1996, 1997 and 1999. She was also a member of the 1998 Canadian Olympic team and won a silver medal at the winter games.
She began her coaching career in 2001 as the head coach of UMass Boston and later at her alma mater of Northeastern in 2004. She later made coaching stops at Minnesota Duluth and Dartmouth College as an assistant and head coach, respectively.
Schuler was named the head coach of the Canadian National Women's Hockey team during the 2015-16 season and again for the 2016-17 season. She would later lead the national women's team to the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. Schuler and Team Canada went on to face the United States in the gold medal game; the U.S. would capture the gold medal in a thrilling 3-2 shootout win, and Canada took home the silver medal.
The Scarborough, Ontario native was also a Development Camp coach for Hockey Canada for five years (2008-13), an assistant with the National Women's Team (2010-11), head coach of the U22 National Women's Team (2011-12), assistant of the U18 National Team (2012-13) and head coach of the U18 National Team (2013-14).
Schuler and Turner have crossed paths within Hockey Canada as they coached the U18 National Women's Team together and won gold at the 2014 IIHF Women's World Championship in Budapest. Schuler and Turner guided the U18 team to a dominating gold-medal run, outscoring opponents 25-2 through five games.
Turner and her staff are excited to welcome Schuler to the program and hopes to get going with practices and training over the next few weeks.
