Bobcats Senior Leaders Helped Highlight Impressive 2019-20 Season
HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac men's ice hockey continued its 2019-20 awards presentation Tuesday as seniors Nick Jermain (Norwalk, Connecticut) and Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) were named co-winners of the Coaches' Award, as selected by the team's coaching staff.
Jermain, the team's captain, and Whelan, an assistant captain, each played critical roles for the Bobcats leading to a 21-11-2 record and second-straight 14-6-2 mark in ECAC Hockey play.
Jermain had the best season of his career in 2019-20 as he set career-highs with 12 goals, nine assists and 21 points as well as three power-play goals and five game-winning goals. Jermain played in all 34 games for the Bobcats.
He saw his role increase this season as he joined the Bobcats' power-play unit and contributed right away, scoring on his very first power-play shift at Dartmouth in a 2-2 tie. Jermain provided invaluable leadership for the Bobcats all season long.
Jermain finished his career with 26 goals and 25 assists for 51 points after his breakout season in 2019-20.
Whelan was in the midst of an impressive senior season before it was cut short prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. He scored 13 goals for a third straight season and added 11 assists for 24 points, with all three totals good for his second-most in a single-season. Whelan also added a career-high four power-play goals and tied his career-high with three game-winners.
Throughout his career, Whelan has been a prolific scorer for the Bobcats as he scored at least 13 goals in three consecutive seasons and finished his career tied with Matt Goodrich '99 and Shawn Mansoff '01 for 24th in program history with 48 career goals. He added 30 assists throughout his four seasons to finish with 78 career points in 141 games.
Over his final two seasons, Whelan made his biggest impact with 26 goals and 23 assists for 49 points. As a junior, Whelan set career-highs with 12 assists and 25 points while he set a career-high with 16 goals as a sophomore.
