First Year Ty Smilanic Slated to Be Early Round Pick
HAMDEN, Conn. - A tradition of every June has moved to October this year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as the National Hockey League's (NHL) 2020 Draft begins with Round 1 on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Network followed by Rounds 2-7 on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 11:30 a.m. on NHL Network. The draft will be held virtually instead of Montreal, Quebec as it was originally slated.
Quinnipiac men's ice hockey first year forward Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) is projected to be a first or second round pick in this year's draft, as he ranks No. 24 among North American skaters according to the final rankings from NHL Central Scouting.
Smilanic comes to Quinnipiac after spending two seasons with the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP). Last season he skated in 34 games with the US U-18 National Team where he recorded seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 34 games.
The Bobcats currently have three drafted players on the roster, including:
So far, six Quinnipiac alumni have gone on to play in the NHL and eight former Bobcats have dressed for NHL games, including Connor Clifton '17 (Boston Bruins), Devon Toews '17 (New York Islanders) and Matthew Peca '15 (Ottawa Senators) who played in the NHL in 2019-20.
The Bobcats have had at eight players drafted since the 2013 NHL Draft and have had at least one pick in eight of the last 10 drafts. Petruzzelli is the highest draft pick in program history after he was taken in the third round with the 88th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
