HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team begins its second week of BIG EAST play Friday afternoon as the Bobcats travel down to Washington, D.C. to meet the Georgetown Hoyas before returning to Hamden to host the Columbia Lions Sunday afternoon.
Scouting Georgetown
Georgetown comes into Friday's matchup sporting a 5-3 record and are 1-0 in BIG EAST play after picking up a league-opening 3-2 win against Villanova last Friday. The Hoyas have won three of their last four games, including non-conference wins against Rider and La Salle in that span. Lindsay Getz leads the Hoyas with four goals and nine points on the season while Michaela Bruno has three goals and seven points for second. Goalkeeper Ciara Weets has started all eight games in cage, sporting a .772 save percentage, 1.63 GAA and one shutout.
All-Time vs. Georgetown
The Bobcats and Hoyas have met three times in their program histories, with all three meetings coming in the past three seasons since the Bobcats joined the BIG EAST. Quinnipiac has won all three meetings with Friday serving as the Bobcats' second trip to Cooper Field. The last time the Bobcats and Hoyas met in Washington, D.C., Quinnipiac came away with a 2-1 win.
Scouting Columbia
Columbia is 3-3 heading into the weekend after a challenging start to the 2019 season with matchups against three teams currently ranked in the top 20 of the RPI and wins against Boston University and Maine who were nationally ranked at the time of their games. Last weekend, Columbia fell in a pair of one-goal games at Fairfield and against UMass Lowell. Jennifer Trieschman and Kelsey Farkas are tied for the team lead with eight points while Trieschman leads the team with four goals and Farkas has three goals and two assists. Alexa Conomikes has paced the Lions in cage as she has made all six starts, going 3-3 with a 2.35 GAA and .708 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Columbia
Quinnipiac is 4-4 all-time against Columbia dating back to the first meeting between the two teams during the 2003 season. The Bobcats are 1-2 all-time at home against the Lions and are hosting Columbia for the first time since 2009 when the Bobcats fell, 3-2. Last season, Quinnipiac picked up a come-from-behind, 3-2, win in New York City.
Mental Health Awareness Game
Sunday's home game against Columbia marks the Bobcats' Mental Health Awareness Game where they will have an information table set up to inform people about the importance of mental health and the different resources available to students, staff and faculty at Quinnipiac. Quinnipiac Field Hockey will be recognizing the campaign, #4Body4Mind, created by Mental Health America to help promote taking care of your entire body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Bianka Strubbe has continued her torrid start to the 2019 season as she tallied three goals in three games for the Bobcats, including her first two-goal game at Hofstra on Sept. 16. With her game-winning tally against Vermont on Sunday, Strubbe now has a career-high four goals this season and tied her career-high with nine points.
Leading the Way
With Strubbe's great start, she is tied for 40th in the nation averaging 0.67 goals per game and tied for 49th with her 1.50 points per game average. Strubbe is also tied for fourth in the BIG EAST in goals per game and sixth in points per game. Goalkeeper Hedda Biermann-Ratjen also ranks among the league and national leaders as she is fourth in the BIG EAST and 24th in the nation with a .762 save percentage, second in the league and 25th nationally with 5.33 saves per game and also ranks third in the BIG EAST with 32 total saves.
Great Hedda on Her Shoulders
Biermann-Ratjen recorded her second shutout of the season in just her fourth start with the Bobcats 1-0 blanking of the Catamounts on Sunday. Both her victories this season have been shutouts for the Bobcats. Prior to the Bobcats win over Vermont, Biermann-Ratjen also recorded a career-high 10 saves in her BIG EAST debut against UConn on Friday before her three-save shutout.
Shutting Out the Competition
Quinnipiac now has two shutouts this season, which are tied for its most in the past five seasons. Biermann-Ratjen has both shutouts for the Bobcats, tying Livy Golini's mark in 2017 for most shutouts by an individual in that span. The Bobcats are looking for their most shutouts in a season since recording three in 2014 while the program record for shutouts in a season is eight set in 2003.
Big Time Helper
Inès Ruiz Martinez picked up her third assist of the season on Strubbe's game-winning goal, good for her most helpers in a season since recording five as a freshman in 2016. Ruiz Martinez has recorded all three assists as the stick-stop on penalty corners for the Bobcats. She also has two defensive saves on the season, with her most recent coming against No. 4 UConn Friday afternoon.
Val-ient
Valerie Perkins also recorded her third assist of the season as she inserted the penalty corner where Strubbe stuck her game-winning goal. Perkins' has three assists for a second straight season and now has nine assists in her career. In addition to her nine career assists, Perkins has eight goals for 25 points.
Marathon Women
Amanda Funaro, Mikayla Dugan and Ruiz Martinez have each played all 420 minutes this season to lead the Bobcats in minutes played in 2019. Funaro and Dugan have seen an increased role, each earning starting spots on the defensive side of the ball for the Bobcats while Ruiz Martinez has played in all but two games during her career, making 47 starts.
