Cappello Scores First Career Goal, Funaro Tallies Winner in Shootout to Lead Bobcats
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team and Georgetown Hoyas battled back and forth Friday afternoon but Amanda Funaro (Nesconset, New York) scored the game-winner in a shootout to pick up the Bobcats first BIG EAST victory of the season, 2-1, over the Hoyas.
Julianna Cappello (Mohegan Lake, New York) scored the game-tying goal for the Bobcats with about 48 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter for her first career goal. Bianka Strubbe (Wroclaw, Poland) fed the ball into the circle and Brooke Whipkey (Charlotte, North Carolina) redirected the ball into the air and Cappello batted the ball out of mid-air to bury the game-tying goal.
Neither team managed to score a goal in the two overtime periods but Cappello nearly tied won the game in the second overtime but she sent a shot off the post before heading to the shootout.
Mack Vorel (Mendham, New Jersey) came off the bench for the shootout after Hedda Biermann-Ratjen (Hamburg, Germany) made four saves in regulation and the two overtime periods. Cappello made her initial shootout shot but the Bobcats faced an early deficit after Georgetown's first two went in.

Head Coach Becca Main
"I would call that a team full of grit, they were very gritty, they were grittilicious. That was just the epitome of grinding it out. We talked about it all week, when you're on field turf you have to grind it out, especially against a good Georgetown team. Georgetown has been elevating their program the last couple years and their coaching is really fantastic so it was really one of those crazy games.
"Emotionally, I felt proud of the way we handled ourselves. We were down a player in overtime for about seven minutes and we got the 8-ball a few times but grit overcame getting out of ourselves and out of our game. They executed a game plan and they won."
On Julianna Cappello
Julianna left the state of New York as one of the leading scorers in the state while she was there and she proved that today in really have an excellent game. We saw her confidence build throughout the game and she was kind of just our go-to player. There was no hesitation for her. She just rose to the occasion today, which we saw coming this week and it was just nice to see somebody else get what they deserve and what they've worked for.
On Amanda Funaro
Amanda really is one of our best players on the field and she is just a beast. We call her a beast in terms of what she can do but her ability to stay composed and calm is impressive. She was so calm and careful about that eight seconds but it was efficient and smart, and she finished it for us.
