Former Men's Ice Hockey Goaltender Wins ECHL Title with Expansion Newfoundland
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – Former Quinnipiac men's ice hockey goaltender Michael Garteig '16 and the Newfoundland Growlers won the 2019 Kelly Cup for the ECHL Championship Wednesday night with a 4-3 win over the Toledo Walleye.
The Growlers, in their inaugural season as an ECHL Franchise, are the first franchise since the Greensboro Monarchs in 1990 to win the ECHL Title in its expansion season.
Garteig was stellar all playoffs for the Growlers as he posted a 16-6-1-0 record with a 2.19 GAA and .928 save percentage in 23 games played on the way to the Kelly Cup. He also finished the playoffs with 726 saves, averaging 31.57 saves per game in the playoffs.
Garteig is in his third professional season since graduating from Quinnipiac in 2016. He began is career in the Vancouver Canucks organization, spending time with ECHL franchises Alaska Aces and Kalamazoo Wings in addition to the Utica Comets. This season, Garteig signed with the Growlers and spent two games in Toronto with the AHL's Toronto Marlies.
Garteig is still Quinnipiac's all-time wins leader with 78 wins, 20 shutouts and a 1.96 GAA while his .917 save percentage ranks fourth in program history.
CLIFFY HOCKEY UPDATE
The Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues are all tied up, 2-2, in the Stanley Cup Finals with Game Five set for Thursday, June 6 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
Connor Clifton logged a finals-high 18:14 time on ice and skated in 24 shifts for the Bruins in the losing effort Monday.
So far in the Stanley Cup Finals, Clifton has a goal and an assist along with two shots on goal and an average time on ice of 15:34.
