Bobcats Reach Penultimate Day of Greenville Regional, One of Final No. 4 Seeds Eliminated

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Quinnipiac baseball team's record-breaking season came to an end Sunday as the Bobcats fell in a pair of games to Campbell, 9-8, and No. 10 East Carolina, 13-3, in the Greenville Regional of the 2019 NCAA Baseball Tournament.
Quinnipiac had defeated ECU Saturday night to advance in the winner's side of the regional bracket before falling in a heartbreaker against Campbell as the Fighting Camels' walked off in the bottom of the ninth inning with a sacrifice fly in Sunday's 4 p.m. game.
With the pair of losses, the Bobcats were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament but were the second-to-last No. 4 regional seed to conclude play in the tournament.
The Bobcats and Fighting Camels battled back-and-forth from first pitch with both teams answering runs from the other in timely fashion. Quinnipiac took an 8-7 lead in the top of the ninth inning as Derek Kasperzyk (Killingworth, Connecticut) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch but Campbell responded with two runs in the bottom of the ninth after two hit by pitches, a fielding error and a sacrifice fly.
The Bobcats then met the Pirates in an elimination game with the winner advancing to the regional final, but Quinnipiac came up short despite a hard-fought effort. Kevin Huscher (Middleboro, Massachusetts) scored on a wild pitch to even the game, 1-1, in the second inning but ECU scored seven runs over the next four innings to put the game out of reach.
Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) finished the day with five hits between the two games, including his career-high tying four hits against Campbell. Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) went 3 for 5 with four RBIs against Campbell while Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) reached base four times against ECU with three hits, including a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Kevin Huscher (Middleboro, Massachusetts) went 2 for 4 against ECU with a double and scored two runs and Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) had four hits between the two games.
Quinnipiac recorded its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory in the Greenville Regional and finished the season with a program record 30 wins. The Bobcats also set program records in most offensive categories as well as strikeouts by the pitching staff.

THIRD INNING
- Lutz singled through the right side after a seven-pitch at bat and moved up to second on a wild pitch.
- Moskey drilled a line drive just over the right fielder's head and off the wall to score Lutz to tie the game, 1-1.
- After Moskey stole third, Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) singled to right field to easily score Moskey and make it 2-0.
- Marrero advanced to second on a wild pitch and Ostberg singled to put runners on the corners and force a pitching change from the Fighting Camels.
- Vulgamore lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Marrero and take a 3-0 lead.
- Campbell answered and tied the game in the bottom of the third inning but the Bobcats responded with two runs to reclaim the lead.
- Scafariello drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the inning and moved up to third on a single to left center from Lutz, where he advanced to second on the throw.
- Moskey singled through the left side to score Scafariello before Lutz scored as Marrero grounded into a double play.
- Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) led off the inning with a single to right field on the eighth pitch of the at bat after battling back from an 0-2 count.
- Scafariello ripped the first pitch he saw for a double down the left field line to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
- With one out in the inning, Moskey chopped a single up the middle to bring home both Cruz and Scafariello to take a 7-6 lead.
- Bender singled through the left side of the infield for his fourth hit of the game and advance to third on a failed pickoff from Campbell reliever Seth Johnson.
- Derek Kasperzyk (Killingworth, Connecticut) came on to pinch-run for Bender and later scored on a wild pitch to take the 8-7 lead.

SECOND INNING
- Huscher doubled to the right field wall as the ECU right fielder Chandler Jenkins crashed into the wall trying to make the catch
- He advanced to third on a groundout by Cruz before coming home to score on a wild pitch
- Huscher singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning.
- After a fly out, Scafariello drew a four-pitch walk and Lutz singled to load the bases
- Scafariello was picked off before Moskey walked to reload the bases with two outs.
- Marrero drew the Bobcats third walk of the inning, this time with the bases loaded, to score Huscher and pull the Bobcats within 5-2.

NOTES
- Quinnipiac finished the season with a program record 30 wins on the season and recorded its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with Saturday's win at ECU
- Quinnipiac was one of six regional No. 4 seeds to win games in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and one of just two (Cincinnati) to defeat a No. 1 regional seed.
- The Bobcats also set program records on the season in runs scored, hits, doubles, stolen bases, walks and strikeouts pitching while it also set a Division I program record in RBIs
- Moskey racked up three hits and four RBIs for the Bobcats Sunday afternoon and has a five-game hitting streak with 11 hits and 13 RBIs in that span.
- He picked up a double in the loss to tie the program record for doubles in a career with 49.
- Moskey also finished his career tied for fourth in program history with 137 runs scored and third in Division I, and was sixth in program history with 215 hits
- Bender finished the day with five hits, including his 4 for 5 showing against the Camels to finish the season with a team-best .322 batting average with 64 hits.
- He finished the season with a 10-game hitting streak.
- Marrero had four hits between the two games, scored two runs and drove in two RBIs after a 3 for 4 night against ECU
- Marrero finished the season with 51 runs scored, the most in Division I program history and tied with Glenn Hoff '97 for the second-most runs in a season all-time.
- Vulgamore drove in two RBIs Sunday to finish the season with 55 RBIs, the third-most in a season in program history
- Scafariello recorded his 10th double of the season and drove in his 37th RBI for the Bobcats before drawing a pair of walks against the Pirates.
- Lutz had four hits and two runs scored Sunday to finish the season with a six-game hitting streak
- Huscher had three hits on the day, including a 2 for 4 night against ECU and scored two runs
- He finished his career with a six-game hitting streak, hits in 10 of his last 11 games and scored runs in six of his final seven games.
