GREENVILLE, N.C. – Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut) drilled a no-doubt, two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Quinnipiac baseball team downed the No. 10 ECU Pirates, 5-4, Saturday night at Clark-LeClair Field.
The Bobcats' victory over the Pirates was their first-ever in the NCAA Tournament as they advanced on the winner's side of the bracket to face the regional's No. 3 seed Campbell Sunday at 4 p.m. Quinnipiac also set a program record for wins in a season as it earned its 30th victory.
Scafariello went 1 for 3 with his clutch two-run home run in the seventh inning, just one inning after throwing ECU's potential go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) went 2 for 3 with a first-inning home run and a triple to aid in the Bobcats offensive output and now has a team-high 53 RBIs this season.
Chris Enns (Canton, Connecticut) was spectacular on the mound for the Bobcats as he struck out six batters over 6 2/3 innings. After allowing two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, Enns settled in to shut down the Pirates before handing off the ball to Colin Donnelly (Flemington, New Jersey) from the bullpen to close it out.
