HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team is back on the field this weekend with a return to MAAC play as the Bobcats travel to New Rochelle, New York, to take on the Iona Gaels in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
Scouting Iona
The Gaels have struggled this season despite winning two of their last three MAAC series. Iona comes into the weekend with an 11-32 record and 5-10 mark in MAAC play. The Gaels have lost their last five games after getting swept by Siena last weekend, sandwiched between losses at Rutgers and St. Johns. Saturday marks Iona's first home game since April 14. Iona is led offensive by Joe DeMaio who has a .288 batting average in 38 games while Fran Kinsey leads the team with 41 hits, 32 runs scored, 13 doubles and 23 RBIs to go with his .273 batting average. As a team, Iona is batting just .235 and have been outscored by over 100 runs. Stephen Hansen has been the Gaels best starting pitcher with a 3.42 ERA as he has 68 strikeouts in 73.2 innings pitched on his way to a 3-6 record.
All-Time vs. Iona
The Bobcats are 8-4 all-time against the Gaels dating back to the 2014 season, Quinnipiac's first as a member of the MAAC. Quinnipiac won the first six meetings between the two teams before Iona has taken four of the last six. Last season, the Gaels took the final two games of the series after the Bobcats won the opener. Quinnipiac is 4-2 all-time at City Park.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats defeated the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils the last time out in a 6-5 victory in the third game in three days. The Bobcats previously fell at Bryant, 8-6, following a 15-4 victory over Rider to complete the weekend sweep in MAAC play.
Return of the MAAC
Quinnipiac has swept its MAAC series in three of its five MAAC weekends on the way to an 11-4 mark in league play. The Bobcats have swept Saint Peter's, Niagara and Rider; as well as recording single wins vs. Canisius and Siena. The Bobcats outscored the Broncs, 38-14, in their three-game series this past weekend.
Record Breaking Blast
Liam Scafariello has been on a tear as of late as he's blasted four home runs in his last five games. In the Bobcats last game on Wednesday, Scafariello hit his 40th career home run to break the program record of 39 set by Joe Zangari '00. Scafariello reached the 40-home run mark in just three seasons. Scafariello is also just one home run away from becoming the second Bobcat in program history with three seasons of 10 or more home runs.
In addition to his power, he is also two walks shy of breaking Rob Pescitelli's Division I program record for walks in a career with 80. Scafariello also came around to score six runs and drive in seven RBIs over the past week, making him the seventh player in program history with 100 career runs and RBIs
Double Trouble
Brian Moskey recorded three doubles in his last two games and he has hits in five of his last six games to raise his batting average to .261 on the season and has scored a run in six straight games. He now has 44 doubles in his career, passing current head coach John Delaney '08 for sixth on the all-time list. Moskey also has 196 hits in his career, one shy of tying Mickey Amanti '11 for 10th in program history and four shy of becoming the 10th player in program history with 200 career hits.
20/20 Vision
The Bobcats recorded their 20th victory of the season Wednesday afternoon to give them 20-plus wins for the fourth time in the past five seasons. Last season, the Bobcats finished with 26 victories as they look to improve on last year's win-total. Quinnipiac is chasing its program record of 29 victories which was set in 2007 and match in 2015.
Workin' the 9th
Andrew Workman has been one of the Bobcats bright spots out of the bullpen as he has recorded saves in four of his last five appearances to move him into a tie with Gary Binkiewicz '15 for the third-most saves in a single season in program history with seven. Workman has allowed just one earned run since March 13 and is up to 35 innings pitched on the season, racking up 26 strikeouts. He ranks among the best relievers in the MAAC with a 1.29 ERA.
Matthew's Magic
Matthew Draper made his first career start on Wednesday in the Bobcats' win over CCSU as he cruised through six innings of work, recording seven strikeouts and scattering four hits. He did not allow a hit over his final three innings of work as he picked up his second win of the season
Hush Puppies
Kevin Huscher showed off some power on Wednesday as he doubled and blasted a two-run home run, finishing the day with three RBIs. He now has a career-high two home runs this season and is nearing 10 extra-base hits for the first time in his career,
Weekend Starters
Quinnipiac's weekend starting rotation is among the best in the MAAC as Tyler Poulin comes into the weekend tied for nine with a 3.71 ERA, seventh with a .246 opponent batting average and 10th with 58 strikeouts. All three starting pitchers rank in the top 10 in opponent batting average as Chris Enns is fifth with a .232 OBA and Arthur Correira has a .250 OBA. Enns has a 3.98 ERA while his 52 innings pitched and 55 strikeouts are both good for career-highs and Correira has a 4.27 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched in his first year as a starting pitcher.
