Baseball Kicks off MAAC Tournament Thursday

Bobcats Open Up Against No. 3 Seed Fairfield at 11 A.M.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac baseball team is set to begin play at the 2019 MAAC Baseball Tournament this weekend as the No. 2 seed after clinching a share of the regular season title.
Looking at the Field
Quinnipiac will open the first round of the tournament against No. 3 Fairfield after the Stags downed No. 6 Monmouth in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday. The Bobcats went 1-2 against the Stags this season, falling in two games 8-7 and 3-0 but winning the final game between the two teams, 15-11. Quinnipiac finished the season 5-4 against all MAAC Tournament opponents as the Bobcats were 3-0 against Manhattan, and 1-2 against both Canisius and Manhattan. The Bobcats never played Marist or Monmouth during the 2019 season.
All-Time vs. Canisius
The Bobcats own a 7-12 record against Canisius in 19 all-time meetings. Quinnipiac went 1-2 against Canisius this season with their matchup coming in Hamden. The Bobcats are 3-4 in the past two seasons against the Golden Griffins after Canisius defeated Quinnipiac in the first MAAC Tournament game last season.
All-Time vs. Fairfield
Quinnipiac is 18-29 all-time against Fairfield after their three-game series earlier this month when the Bobcats went 1-2 against the Stags. This season was the first meeting between the two teams since 2017.
All-Time vs. Marist
The Bobcats are 7-9 all-time against the Red Foxes dating back to the 2001 season. Quinnipiac is 6-7 in 13 meetings since joining the MAAC, including 1-0 in MAAC Tournament play when the two teams met back in 2015.
All-Time vs. Manhattan
Quinnipiac owns a 12-4 record against Manhattan after sweeping them for the first time in program history this season. The Bobcats have won all five series since joining the MAAC, and are 11-4 in those five series.
All-Time vs. Monmouth
The Bobcats are 23-43 in 66 all-time meetings dating back to the 1999 when Quinnipiac played its first season at the Division I level. Quinnipiac won all three regular season meetings between the two teams last season but fell in the MAAC Tournament, which eliminated the Bobcats. Quinnipiac is 0-2 all-time against Manhattan in the MAAC Tournament.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac swept Manhattan to close out the 2019 MAAC Regular Season, outscoring the Jaspers 31-8 in the three games. The Bobcats opened the weekend with a 6-0 shutout before hanging on for a 7-5 win in the seven-inning game. Quinnipiac dominated the final game, 18-3, to clinch a share of the 2019 Regular Season Championship.
MAAC Regular Season Title
Quinnipiac's co-regular season championship with Canisius is its first regular season championship since joining the MAAC in the 2014 season and its third at the Division I level. The Bobcats previously won regular season championships in 2005 and 2007 as members of the Northeast Conference and are in search of Quinnipiac's second-ever Division I NCAA Tournament Appearance (2005).
What an Honor
Andrew Workman was named the MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year Tuesday night after putting together one of the best seasons by a reliever. He owns a 1.14 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and ranks second in the MAAC with eight saves. His eight saves are also tied for the second-most in a season in program history.
All-League Players
The Bobcats placed three players on the All-MAAC First Team as Andre Marrero, Ian Ostberg and Tyler Poulin were all recognized. Colton Bender's accolades continued as he was named to the All-MAAC Second Team. Quinnipiac also added 13 players to the All-Academic Team, its second-most in a season in program history.
MAAC Weekly Awards
Andre Marrero and Tyler Poulin picked up MAAC weekly awards after the final week of the regular season, with Marrero being named the player of the week and Poulin earning pitcher of the week. Marrero has eight hits, including seven for extra bases with three home runs and four doubles, eight runs and eight RBIs in the series. Poulin pitched seven innings on his way to a combined shutout, striking out seven batters in the outing.
Andre the Giant
Andre Marrero is in the midst of his best season yet in a Bobcat uniform as he leads the team with a slash line of .332/.397/.571 to go with 68 hits, 47 runs scored, 25 extra-base hits and 44 RBIs. Marrero has 10 home runs for the first time in his career and has career-highs in nearly every offensive category. His 47 runs scored are tied for the third-most in a season in Division I program history and fifth all-time while his 68 hits are tied for sixth all-time and his 44 RBIs are tied for ninth in a season in Division I program history.
Need Vulgamore of It
Evan Vulgamore finished the season with hits in three straight games and had four extra-base hits in the final series against the Jaspers. He finished the season with a .279 batting average, 53 hits, including 27 for extra bases, and drove in 51 RBIs with 41 runs scored. Vulgamore's 51 RBIs are the second-most in Division I program history and third all-time while his 17 doubles are tied for third.
Scoring and Driving in Runs
Marrero and Vulgamore are the seventh and eighth players in Division I program history to score 40-plus runs and drive in 40-plus RBIs in a season here in 2019. In addition, Vulgamore is just the second to score 40 runs and drive in 50 RBIs after Ben Gibson '18 did so last season.
Poulin's Powering
Tyler Poulin has been one of the Bobcats best starting pitchers this season as he is 6-2 with a 3.72 ERA, recording 73 strikeouts in 75 innings pitched. Poulin's 73 strikeouts are good for the fourth-most in a season in Division I program history while his 159 career strikeouts are ninth in Division I program history.
Osty Spumante
Ian Ostberg has had a career-year for the Bobcats as he is batting .330 on the season with 65 hits to go with 36 runs and 31 RBIs. Ostberg has career-highs across the board for the Bobcats, including his 11 doubles.
All Enns
Chris Enns has been the Bobcats second-best pitcher all season long as he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in nine of his 13 starts leading to a 3.36 ERA and .236 opponent batting average. He has recorded career-highs with 69 2/3 innings pitched and 68 strikeouts. He has struck out more batters this season than the first two of his career (59).
Cruz Control
Anthony Cruz has been impressive in his final season for the Bobcats in 2019 with a .301 batting average in 38 games as he has career-highs with 11 doubles, 19 RBIs, 24 runs and 15 walks. He has 37 hits, just one shy of tying his career-high. Cruz's 11 doubles this season are more than the first three seasons of his career.
Avatar the Last Airbender
The other Bobcats' catcher, Colton Bender has hits in four straight games as he has career-highs across the board with a .313 batting average, 56 hits, 15 extra-base hits, 24 runs, 32 RBIs and 15 walks. Bender continues to shine for the Bobcats as he eclipsed 30 RBIs and 20 runs scored for the first time in his career while also throwing out 10 runners stealing.
Scaf's Blast
Liam Scafariello has become the program record holder in several categories in just three seasons with the team as he has 43 career home runs and 87 walks while his 115 career RBIs are fifth in program history. He has 12 home runs this season, making him the second player in program history to record three seasons of 10-plus home runs in a career.
Brian's Song
Brian Moskey has been among the best players in program history as he has played in 200 career games. He ranks seventh in Division I program history with 204 hits and is eighth all-time. His 46 doubles ranks third in program history and his 131 runs scored are fourth in Division I program history and tied for seventh in program history.
Speed Demons
Quinnipiac has been one of the speediest teams on the base paths as the Bobcats are tied for 17th in the nation with 104 stolen bases and are one of just 21 teams in the nation with 100 or more stolen bases. The Bobcats are also tied for 17th averaging 1.96 stolen bases per game.
