Bobcats Baseball Advances in MAAC Tournament, Lutz Leads Offense with Three RBIs
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Tyler Poulin (Randolph, New Jersey) struck out seven batters in seven innings of work and Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) drove in three RBIs as the Quinnipiac baseball team downed No. 3 seed Fairfield, 6-3, Friday in its MAAC Tournament opener.
Poulin's seven strikeout performance was his second straight and fourth of the season as he shut down the Stags and let the offense get to work.
Lutz got the Bobcats on the board in the bottom of the second inning as he scored Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) with a bases loaded safety squeeze to take a 1-0 lead before Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) singled through the left side to drive in a pair of runs to extend the lead to 3-0.
Fairfield answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning but the tie-game didn't last long as the Bobcats added three back in the bottom of the fifth to re-take the lead. Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut) doubled down the left field line to score Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) to make it 4-3 before Lutz drove a two-RBI single down the right field line to make it 6-3.
Lutz finished the game 1 for 2 with three RBIs, a walk and a stolen base while Moskey was 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs. Cruz singled twice and scored two runs while Scafariello doubled and scored two runs.

SECOND INNING
- Bender led off the inning with a first-pitch single and moved up to second on a single from Cruz.
- Fairfield starter Josh Arnold threw a ball into centerfield trying pick off Bender at second which put both runners in scoring position.
- With one out in the inning, Scafariello was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Lutz laid down his safety squeeze to score Bender from third.
- Moskey followed with a single through the left side to score Cruz and Scafariello to take a 3-0 lead in the inning.
- After Fairfield tied the game in the fourth, Quinnipiac added three more runs with two outs in the fifth to reclaim the lead.
- Cruz reached on a fielding error by Fairfield second baseman Justin Guerrera before moving up to second on a Huscher single.
- Scafariello drilled a double down the left field line that scored Cruz from second base to make it 4-3 Bobcats.
- Lutz battled in the next at-bat, fouling off four pitches before ripping a single down the right field line to score both Huscher and Scafariello to claim a 6-3 lead

- Poulin pitched seven innings for a second straight start and tied his season-low with three hits allowed
- He struck out seven batters in a game for the fourth time this season to give him 80 strikeouts this season, becoming the first pitcher at the program's Division I level to have back-to-back seasons with 80-plus strikeouts and just the third all-time (Dan Ford '68, Dan Gooley '70
- Poulin's 166 career strikeouts move him into seventh in Division I program history, passing Taylor Luciani '18 who finished with 164.
- Lutz tied his season-high with three RBIs Friday and reached base twice as he singled and walked
- Moskey singled twice to give him 206 hits in his career, tied with head coach John Delaney '08 for seventh in program history
- He recorded two RBIs in a game for the first time since May 1 with his second-inning single
- Scafariello drilled his ninth double of the season and 30th of his career and came around to score two runs for the Bobcats
- Cruz continued his hat hitting as he went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and scored two runs
- He now has 100 hits in his career and a career-high 39 hits this season for the Bobcats
- Huscher recorded his third two-hit game in the past five games as he went 2 for 4 with a run scored
- Workman tied the single-season program record with his ninth save and is tied for third in a career with 10
- He pitched two innings to earn the save and recorded one strikeout while allowing just his seventh earned run of the season
- The Bobcats advanced in the winner's bracket of the 2019 MAAC Baseball Tournament and will face the No. 5 seed Manhattan Saturday morning
