Softball Wraps up Regular Season vs Canisius, Niagara

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac softball team is set to finish the regular season of conference play with two sets of doubleheaders against Canisius and Niagara on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. Quinnipiac currently sits in seventh place (7-9) in the MAAC standings.

Last Time Out
Quinnipiac played the UConn Huskies in a single game in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies came out on top, 2-1, after 11 innings of play. The Bobcats were leading the game, 1-0, until the sixth inning when UConn scored one run off a wild pitch. Later, the Huskies would score a walk-off single to win the game, 2-1. Freshman Hannah Davis led the Bobcats with one double, going 2-4 at the plate.
Scouting Canisius
Quinnipiac holds a 4-7 record against Canisius after sweeping the series last season. The Golden Griffins will host the Bobcats after splitting a MAAC series with Saint Peter's on April 28. Erin Hufford leads Canisius with a .360 batting average with 41 hits, 22 runs, four doubles and two RBIs. Emily Nicosia (5-8) leads the team in the circle with a 4.08 ERA through 91 innings pitched with 48 strikeouts.
Notes on Niagara
The Bobcats have the all-time advantage against the Purple Eagles with an 8-4 record. Quinnipiac also swept the series last season against Niagara. The Purple Eagles are coming off a sweep of Manhattan on April 28 and will also face St. Bonaventure University in a doubleheader today, Thursday, May 2.
Jerri Ann Orfano leads the team with a .302 average with 35 hits, 11 runs, five doubles and three home runs. Sierra Bertrand holds a 3.54 ERA in the circle through 93 innings pitched with 94 strikeouts for Niagara.
A Look at the MAAC
Monmouth and Marist are tied for first place in the MAAC with an 11-3 record. Iona is in third with an 11-5 record, and Siena holds the fourth spot with a 10-6 record. Fairfield and Niagara are tied for the fifth and sixth spots with a 9-7 record. Quinnipiac stands in seventh with a 7-9 record, hoping to advance to sixth or better after this weekend's games. Manhattan, Canisius, Rider and Saint Peter's make-up the bottom four spots.
