Baseball Sweeps Manhattan in Thursday Doubleheader

Bobcats Shut Out Jaspers in Game One, Blast Four Home Runs in Doubleheader
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team moved into a tie for first in the MAAC with a doubleheader sweep of the Manhattan Jaspers with 6-0 and 7-5 wins Thursday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field.
Quinnipiac's pair of wins, coupled with Canisius' split at Niagara, pushed the Bobcats' record to 16-7 in conference play. The Bobcats have put themselves in strong position to have a chance at winning at least a share of the first regular season championship since joining the MAAC as well as a bye in the MAAC Tournament.
Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) finished the doubleheader with four hits, including three extra-base hits in the second game of the doubleheader as he went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a three-run home run.
Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut), Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut) and Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) all homered in the first game of the doubleheader, including Scafariello and Moskey going back-to-back in the sixth inning before Vulgamore's home run later in the inning.
Tyler Poulin (Randolph, New Jersey) dazzled in the start of game one as he struck out seven batters in seven scoreless innings before Colin Donnelly (Flemington, New Jersey) finished the shutout with three strikeouts in two innings.
Andrew Workman (Pound Ridge, New York) was solid in the save of game two, striking out three in three innings of work with just one hit allowed.

FIFTH INNING
- Vulgamore led off the inning as he reached on an error by Manhattan third baseman Alex Cerda
- After stealing second base, Vulgamore moved up tot third on a bunt single from Cruz for the Bobcats first hit of the game
- The Bobcats then took the lead as Vulgamore came home to score as Kevin Huscher (Middleboro, Massachusetts) laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt.
- Scafariello and Moskey hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning and extend the Bobcats lead to 3-0.
- Marrero followed with a single down the right field line and moved up to third as he stole second base before advancing on a throwing error by the catcher Matt Padre.
- After a lineout, Vulgamore blasted a two-run home run to left centerfield to take a 5-0 lead
- Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) doubled to left field and came home to score on an RBI double to centerfield from Cruz.

FIRST INNING
- Marrero doubled to left centerfield with one out in the inning and came around to score on an Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) single through the left side.
- Ostberg stole second and Vulgamore walked to put a pair of runners on before Bender brought home Ostberg with an RBI single and Vulgamore scored from first on a fielding error by the left fielder Cam Crabbe.
- Scafariello drew the first of two walks to lead off the bottom of the inning and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt.
- Moskey reached on a bunt single down the third base line before Marrero blasted a three-run home run to take a 6-0 lead
- The Bobcats extended their lead to 7-0 as Marrero led off the inning with a double down the left field line and moved up to third on a groundout.
- Vulgamore singled down the left field line to score Marrero with this third RBI of the day.
NOTES
- The Bobcats are tied for first in the MAAC at 16-7 after Thursday's doubleheader sweep and Canisius' loss in the second game of their doubleheader.
- Marrero led the Bobcats with four hits on the day, taking over the team lead with 64 hits and 18 stolen bases while extending his hitting streak to five games and 12 of the last 13 games
- His 43 runs scored this season are tied for 10thall-time in program history and tied for fifth in Division I program history
- Marrero is one RBI away from becoming the seventh player in Division I program history with 40 runs and 40 RBIs in a single season

- With a win, Quinnipiac would clinch at least a share of its first MAAC Baseball regular season championship.
