HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team kicks off a five-game road swing with a pair of midweek games away from the QU Baseball Field on Tuesday at Hartford and Wednesday at Boston College, the Bobcats second straight week with road midweek games.
Scouting Hartford
The Hawks come into the week with an 11-15 overall record a solid 6-3 mark in America East play. Since returning up North, the Hawks are 6-4 and just took two of three games from Stony Brook at Fiondella Field. Zachary Ardito leads the Hawks with a .304 batting average, 31 hits and 24 runs scored this season while Chris Sullivan leads the team with 25 RBIs and is second with 30 hits and a .303 batting average. Ashton Bardzell has been one of the top power threats with 16 extra-base hits on nine doubles, four triples and three home runs. As a pitching staff, Hartford has a 6.59 ERA but have racked up 199 strikeouts in 218.2 innings pitched.
All-Time vs. Hartford
Hartford owns the all-time series between the two programs with a 14-8 record in 22 meetings. Tuesday marks the first of two meetings between Quinnipiac and Hartford this season. Last season, the Hawks won both games between the two teams as Quinnipiac looks for its first win against Hartford since April 14, 2016 when the Bobcats downed the Hawks at Fiondella Field, 7-5.
Scouting Boston College
The Eagles are 15-17 so far this season and 6-9 in the ACC but have several big wins throughout the season. This past weekend, Boston College earned a 3-1 victory over No. 1 North Carolina State to salvage a win in the three-game series. The Eagles also have key wins over then-No. 19 Florida State, then-No. 20 Clemson and then-No. 8 Louisville. Sal Frelick has been among the top offensive players in the nation with a .358 batting average along with four home runs and 23 RBIs. Jake Alu is batting .339 with a team-high 27 runs scored and 10 doubles while Jack Cunningham has a team-high five home runs. The Eagles' pitching staff owns a 5.40 ERA with 242 strikeouts in 278.1 innings pitched.
All-Time vs. Boston College
Quinnipiac is in search of its first win against Boston College in program history as the Bobcats are 0-7 all-time. These two teams are meeting for a third consecutive season after the Quinnipiac fell at Boston College last season, 9-5.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats picked up a big win on Sunday against the Canisius Golden Griffins in MAAC play after falling in Saturday's doubleheader. Quinnipiac overcame a three-run deficit late in the game to force extra innings before Colton Bender provided the walk-off heroics in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Buster Posey Award Watch List
Sunday's walk-off hero Colton Bender was named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List, an award presented annually to the nation's top catcher. Previously named the Johnny Bench Award, Bender is the second Bobcats catcher to be named to the watch list and first since Lou Iannotti in 2016.
Alumni in the Pros
This past week, the minor league season kicked off for three Quinnipiac baseball alums who are competing at various levels of professional baseball. Thomas Jankins and Matthew Batten are beginning the season in Double-A of the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres, respectively, while Robbie Hitt is in Single-A with the Brewers.
The Last Airbender
Colton Bender is coming off tying his career-high with four hits in the Bobcats comeback victory on Sunday, a feat he accomplish on March 10 at Florida Gulf Coast. He has now his safely in four straight games for the Bobcats and also has hits in six of his last seven games.
Work It
Andrew Workman was stellar out of the bullpen against Canisius as he totaled 5.1 innings in two appearances, including his first three-inning stint since the first series of 2017. Workman has now allowed an earned run since March 13, spanning eight appearances and 17 innings.
Gimme More
Evan Vulgamore kickstarted the Bobcats ninth-inning rally against Canisius as he launched his third home run of the season to lead off the inning. Vulgamore also scored three runs in the game for a second time this season.
Tip of the Ostberg
Ian Ostberg had a clutch moment of his own early in the game as he drove a bases-loaded double to center field for three of his four RBIs in the game as he recorded his first career four RBI game.
Marrero Magic
Andre Marrero scored a pair of runs and had a pair of hits to lift his batting average back up to .330 on the season after his 14-game hitting streak was snapped with the second game on Saturday. Despite the streak being snapped, he has hit safely in 15 of the last 16 games and has only been held without a hit six times this season.
Hush Puppy
Kevin Huscher scored the game-winning run in Sunday's extra inning victory as he now has scored a run in four consecutive games while extending his hitting streak to five games.
